Curtis's Story

After graduating from Fremont I went to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Graduated from there in 1974 and then attended the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. I then finished an interniship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angles. After that I moved to San Jose, California where I worked for Kaiser for two years. I got married in 1984 and went into private practice in the same year. Practiced in San Jose for 16 years and then moved to Huntsville, TX where I've been since 2000. All three daughters have left the nest. Two have graduated from college (Stanford and Washington University in St. Louis). The youngest is finishing her second year at Spelman in Atlanta. We travel as much as we can. The picture is taken with my wife and daughter when she won a beauty contest. Good health and delivered 257 babies in 2008. Who's the man? Last year we went to France in the spring and Brazil in the fall. We will spend some time in Cape Town, So. Africa this fall. Life with grown children is great. My family has been truly blessed and for that I am eternally grateful. Thank the living God. My youngest daughter has just graduated from Spelman and she is getting married in a month. I'm taking everything out of my name except the essentials as I prepare for retirement. Hell yeah! My youngest daughter was married in Atlanta on July 8, 2011. Even if I do say so myself, it was the best wedding I've ever thrown. The newlyweds honeymooned on Phuket Island off the coast of Thailand. They said if this was what heaven was like they were ready to go. Sign me up. They are settling into married life in Atlanta. As my reward for doing such a stellar job my wife and I took a brief vacation to Italy. Got Pompei off the bucket list and took an Italian cooking class. Next trip is to celebrate my 60th birthday in Paris. Can't wait. If you're in the neighborhood please stop by. Vive la France. My family and I celebrated my 60th birthday in the City of Lights. We rented an apartment near the Opera and all six of us scoured the city. Paris is a magical place and I always feel more alive when I'm there. We ate, drank and saw everything there. I had gone to school in France while in college so I still speak pretty good French. And no American accent! It was fun to hang with my three daughters as adults. They have turned out well and my wife and I are so proud of them. My French friends also got a chance to see the girls again as well as my new son-in-law. Overall it was the trip of a lifetime. I am so incredibly blessed and I thank God for all His blessings. I love my life! 2013 turned out to be an awesome year. Travel is my favorite pastime out side of working (not). We first had an opportunity to travel to Aruba. I had always wanted to go and finally made the decision to do it. The skies were blue, the water was warm, the people were friendly and the food was incredible. Its a good place to relax. Its a small island so didn't take long to explore the whole place. Would I go back? Would rather see other islands in the Caribbean I think. The other bigger trip came in late November when we set sail for Phuket, Thailand. I figured since I paid for my daughter to go, I ought to have the opportunity to check it out myself. So the wife and I departed Houston the day before Thanksgiving for a very long flight. We had a layover in Seoul Korea before getting to Phuket in the middle of the night. WOW!!! Was it ever worth it. The culture, the beaches, the food, the adventures. All in all a very beautiful place. Tranquil when you want it to be and exciting when you want it to be. I rode my first elephant bareback which was such a treat. Went white river rafting for the first time. We took a Thai cooking class and made our own lunch. Delicious! We even met a couple from Los Angeles who knew somebody I went to school with. What a small world! I surprised my wife with a private moonlight dinner on the beach with our own butler. Now that was living large! There is so much to see in this world and if I have anything to say about it we'll keep going until we can't go anymore. One of my daughters moved to England to study film. She really is studying but there was a man involved. She had met him in LA and when his visa was up she decided he was worth investigating further. To make a long story short, they decided to get married in May 2014 so off we go again. We rented an apartment in London for a few days. The weather had been a little rainy prior to our arrival but once there the sun was shining bright and warm. We did a little touring of London and experienced high tea at one of the venerable establishments. It was all in all a very good thing. We met the young man's family on the wedding day. It was a civil ceremony held at the town hall on a Friday afternoon. It was a small, intimate setting with just family. And even though it was a small civil ceremony, the couple was decked out. My daughter looked exquisite and I was one proud papa as I walked her down the aisle. After the million pictures were taken we departed the town hall for a reception held at the home of my son-in-law's uncle and aunt there in London. The setting was beautiful and the food delectable. We ate, talked, laughed and drank until late in the night. Not one word was ever said about them being an inter-racial couple. Guess they do things differently over there. The next morning my wife, daughter and I caught the train to France. The train ride from London to Paris was quick and uneventful. Grabbed a car at the train station and headed southwest towards Tours in the valley of the Loire River. This is the region where all of the big chateaux are and where I went to school when I was in college. We were staying at the country home of some friends I had known for ages. The house was originally started in 1703 and has been modernized over the years. It was so peaceful and picturesque as this was also one of France's many wine regions. As we walked the country lanes there would be vineyards on one side and wheat on the other signifying two things France is known for. Wine and French bread. As you may know fine cuisine is a passion in France and my friends did not disappoint. They kept us boozed up and well fed. I have known some of these people for more than 40 years so we are all like family. You can fell the love going both ways. Its great. My wife and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary while in France. In grand style we dined at the best restaurant in Tours. Unforgettable. Next stop: China in October. Stay tuned. In October, 2014 we embarked upon a tour of China: specifically Beijing and Shanghai. I am not typically a tour traveler. I'd rather do my own thing but in a place like China its better to just sign up for the tour. We saw all the great sights of Beijing including the Great Wall of China. Out of the 42 folks in our group I was the only one to make it to the top of the wall. Felt pretty proud about that. Great view from the top. Then in a park where people are exercising a Chinese man called me ...Expand for more
out to show off my athletic prowess. Let's just say I respected older Americans very well. The only draw back was that I don't like eating Chinese food everyday. The best meal I had in Beijing was at a Japanese restaurant (Nobu). I was amazed at the number of high end retail shops in both Beijing and Shanghai. Either the Chinese like their bling or the shops are catering to the tourists. Shanghai was equally interesting but had a more European flair to it presumably a remnant of its colonial past. In Beijing there was a snack street where you could purchase snakes, beetles, scorpions and such to eat as a light snack. Needless to say I passed on these delights. After considering the entire trip I'd say I am glad I went but I don't have to go back any time soon. Continuing on our adventurous path, we winged our way into the southern hemisphere in April 2015. We have had the opportunity to house Brazilian YMCA workers in our home. We have become close to several of them and went to Brazil for the first time in 2009. We were invited to be in the wedding of one of our Brazilian sons so off we went again. For all of its glam and glitter Brazil is still a third world country with many problems to overcome. Apparently they have a pretty negative impression of Americans in general. You'll be happy to know that we repaired some of the damage done by others prior to our arrival. Just used all the social skills I learned at Fremont to win them over. So when you go tell them Curtis sent you. After the wedding in Belo Horizonte we went to Salvador for a few days at the beach and to learn about Brazil's colonial past. Salvador is where most of Brazil's slaves came into. Brazil received 6-10 times the number of slaves to work the sugar plantations compared to the US. The trip was marred somewhat by some punk trying to mug me as soon as we arrived in Salvador. He tried to grab a gold chain from around my neck. He broke it but I retained it. He thought about coming back for it but I gave him my best impression of an LA thug and told him in very clear English that I would kick his ass if he didn't get the f*ck out of my face. Guess he understood because he slithered away like the snake he was. The rest of the trip was an incredible tapestry of culture, food and history. We'll always go back to Brazil. Next stop: back to France. At the end of August 2015 we ventured back to France. My daughter married an Englishman and moved to England. They were to come to France from London and spend some time with us. We stayed at a B&B owned by some friends in the Loire Valley. It was so good to be there eating, drinking and enjoying the company of friends. My wife has some family not far away so we ventured out and visited with them. Once my daughter and her husband arrived we had one more day to visit Amboise. We then jumped in the hoopty and made our way north near LeMans. My son-in-law's family bought an old cafe and are in the process of restoring it. Its in a tiny little village with lots of history. It was very tranquil and we went on walks through the forest and ambled through ruins. It was a good time with good people. They invited us to visit them at their place in Scotland the next summer. We'll see what happens. We found out in early 2016 that my youngest was pregnant. We had all planned to go to Barbados for a little family reunion. When we heard about the Zika virus outbreak in the Caribbean we backed out of that trip and was trying to find another spot in which to gather. I personally wanted to go to Marbella on the southern coast of Spain but I got voted down. We settled on Newport Beach in Orange County. Had a lovely condo there with a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. We also threw my pregnant daughter a surprise baby shower at Maggiano's in Los Angeles. We really surprised her but good. When she saw all the family and friends there to support her she could do nothing but burst into tears. Its a memory I will have always. Later in the summer I needed to go back to Europe to get some research for a book I'm trying to get written. As it happened, the twins were celebrating their 30th birthday. The one that lives in England was planning a trip to Switzerland. So I said I'd join them and go to the Montreux Jazz Festival. It also happened that I have an old friend that has a restaurant Lausanne. So we went to the festival and celebrated her 30th birthday at L'Ao. It was small. Just me, my daughter, her husband and the owner. Intimate and unforgettable. And now we wait for the first grandchild. She is already spoiled and doesn't even know it. My daughter lives outside Atlanta and wants us to move there. I'm planning to retire from practice in a few years but I need something else to do besides babysitting. If you have any suggestions please feel free to send them my way. Until next time. Well, Miss Harper McKinely Woolfolk was born September 15, 2016 by cesarean section. She weighed in at a hefty 8 pounds 6ounces. My wife and I were there for the delivery. It was a little nerve wracking as this is what I do and it took every bit of restraint I could muster not to tell him what to do. In the end it all turned out fine. I did convince the doctor to let her go home so that we could be with the family in a more relaxed setting. We cooked and cleaned for them. My wife stayed for a bout ten days. I had to get back to work. Since then we have tried to visit at least once a month. We also Skype and FaceTime so that she doesn't forget us. We flew my mother to Atlanta to spend Thanksgiving with my son-in-law's family and to meet her first official great granddaughter. Everyone had a grand time and ate their fill of truly delicious southern cuisine. They were supposed to come to Los Angeles for Christmas but plans fell through. Maybe this Christmas will be the one. Wow! I didn’t realize how much has happened since I last added anything here. Well, it’s Labor Day 2023. I am still working. In fact, if I retired they would have to close labor and delivery. I am the last man standing. We are in the process of trying to find someone, but so far no go. The hospital brings in some doctors to cover me so that I can get away. In fact, I just got back from Brazil today. Had a great time seeing some friends and just relaxing. In May, my wife and I spent some time in France and England seeing family and friends. One of my daughters lives in London and we wanted to see the house she and her husband bought in London. Do you see a pattern here? Yes, I love to travel. Lord willing. I’ll be going on a safari in Kenya and Tanzania next June. I’m healthy and happy and living life to the fullest. Oh, I do have another granddaughter who is two years old and lives in London. The daughter in Atlanta is now pregnant with my first grandson. So grandpa is very thrilled about that. So please pray for my family and myself that we may continue to be healthy, happy and prosperous. If anything significant happens I will let you know. I pray that you will also continue to be healthy, happy and blessed. Hope to see you at the next reunion!
