Cyndi's Story

I met my husband, Sandy Wasson, the first day of my freshman year at Occidental College. We married the beginning of my soph. year, and had Julie the end of that year a few days after Sandy's graduation. Sandy went to work for TWA, and we were relocated to the Bay Area before my senior year. Julie and I commuted (thank you TWA) each week to Los Angeles until I graduated from Occidental in June of 1968. (My college graduation portrait has a two year-old cutie on my lap.) Yes, it was a crazy time in my life and much of my senior year is a blur. I had two more kids, Steve, now 41, and Lindsay, now 30. My husband made life interesting by joining LAPD in 1971, where he had quite an impressive career, retiring as a Captain in 2001. Nothing like having the inside scoop on the riots, the Pope's visit, and the Olympics. (And there¿s nothing like a phone call at 3 a.m. informing him of a murder to disturb the sleep.) I was busy raising and enjoying our kids, and with the surprise arrival of Lindsay 13 years after Julie's birth, found myself with one kid at UCLA, one in high school and one in kindergarten all at the same time. It kept me young and kept the house full of our children's friends for more than 30 years. I think we raised half of them! I worked briefly in real estate where I did well but hated missing Little League and soccer games. I also worked in art sales and did archival preservation of limited edition art. That was interesting, but I retired when our daughter gave birth to our eldest grandson so I could visit a grandchild whenever I wanted! Julie, her husband, Ste...Expand for more
ve, and their three sons have relocated from Florida, where they lived for 10 years, to Northern California. My husband tells folks that I made as many as six trips to Florida in one year, and that is true. Of course, once he retired, he joined me on all of those trips! Lindsay and her husband live in a suburb of Phoenix at the base of the White Tank Mountains and are enjoying their infant daughter. Our son, Steve, and three of his four children live on the east side of Phoenix, so frequent trips to Arizona give us an opportunity to see quite a few family members. Our now 11 year-old granddaughter, Steven's eldest, lives with her mom in Florida, but she spends a month with Steve in the summer and spent Christmas with him last year. We fly her out to join us for every major gathering or one of us picks her up en route to a vacation site like our fabulous trip to Lake Rousseau, Ontario, Canada in 2007. It takes some doing, but we manage to gather the clan fairly often, despite the thousands of miles that separate us. If asked what I want for Christmas or a birthday, it's always "Time with my family." Among the best times we enjoy are gathering for baseball games anywhere we travel. We made it to 2 Spring Training games in AZ in 2009 and 2010, and used to go to the Dodgers' Spring Training in Vero Beach every year. Now we share season tickets with some old friends of Sandy's, and make it to quite a few Dodger games every year. Sandy and I celebrated our 44th anniversary last year. I'm grateful for a strong marriage and a close family. Hope to see you all at a reunion some day!
