Cynthia's Story
College
I went to the University of Phoenix in Sacramento. It was a challenge going to school, working full time and raising my two daughters alone. I thank God for my mother who watched them when I went to class and to study group meetings. It took me a lot longer to finish because I kept getting sick and ending up in the hospital. I finished earning my Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. Everyone still talks about the day I hopped across the stage on my crutches. I was moving so fast they couldn't even take pictures. I talk to my children about the importance of attending college while they are young and don't have any responsibilities. It was hard and I don't want them to have to go through the same hardship. I had some good study groups and some I dropped after that class, the key was to find out everything you could about them before you joined.
Workplace
After the military I did several temp jobs. One was for Intel Corporation in Folsom, CA. I was eventually hired on and have been there since 1995. I started at Intel as an administrative specialist and am now a data analyst. When I started I thought I would always be an admin but thanks to a good friend who saw my potential I started moving away from admin work. It took a long time to move from hourly to exempt but I praise God for keeping me as I travelled that journey. I am cur...Expand for more
rently working in tools that I never would have dreamed I would be able to understand. I have a wonderful manager, who I have never met. I work mostly from home and really enjoy that freedom. I am currently working on starting my own familiy home day care. I love children and it just seems like a great transition from corporate america.
Military
I joined the Air Force in 1982 after spending some time trying to figure out what I wanted to do in life. I was statioin at Nellis AFB, Nevada; Comiso Air Station, Sicily; Hickam AFB, Hawaii, and Beale AFB, California. While in Comiso I met my exhusband and we were married while I was stationed at Hickam and he was in North Dakota. While stationed at Hickam I had a beautiful daughter named La Kysha. While at Beale I had a beautiful daughter named Allison. I remember all the good times I had while in the Air Force. For instance at Nellis hanging out after work with Val, Henry, Lance and many more. In Comiso, the food and the time we went Palermo and we thought we were going to die and it was only an Italian celebration. At Hickam, I loved going to the beach. The great times I had with my roomate Bev. And who can forget my good friend Kathy, who nicknamed La Kysha, "the reign of terror". I didn't do much at Beale but the first time I went to the base I remember there were deer in front of the NCO club.
