Cynthia's Story
After graduating from Ensley in 1967 I attended the University of Alabama and then subsequently taught high school English and German for ten years, first in Panama City, Florida and then for the Department of Defense in Naples, Italy. In 1982 I moved to San Francisco to attend the University of California's Hastings College of the Law. I never practiced, but rather worked as a writer/copy editor/proofreader (and unofficial agency historian) in the development department of the oldest nonprofit west of the Mississippi until my retirement in January 2020. I also "retired" from City Guides after 20 years of leading free walking tours of the city. I enjoy attending the ballet and following the Oakland A's baseball team. I also collect folk art and memorabilia re Anna Q. Nilsson (a silent screen star from Sweden who preceded Garbo) and enjoy puttering around in my...Expand for more
backyard and exploring the Bay Area's sights and museums. I love to travel; in 2022 I took tours to Alaska (a land tour, not a cruise) and Canada (Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto). In Spring 2023 I went to NYC for the first time in decades, exploring the city both as part of a tour group ("Five Boroughs in Five Days") and on my own, then took Amtrak down to Virginia to visit a long-time friend in Richmond and family in the DC area. In December 2005 the Arcadia "Images of America" book, with 128 pages of historical photos with captions about my neighborhood of Visitacion Valley, was published after five of us spent a year working on it.-- my "claim to fame"??? My cats and I live in a fixer-upper Victorian on the southeast edge of the city; I have one ex-husband and no children (or, therefore obviously, grandchildren).and generally enjoy my "single-ness."
