Cynthia's Story

My story - eliminating any of the nasty, unpleasent stuff. Was born in San Jose, CA (so that makes me a Golden Girl!) with three older brothers. Went to kindergarten through 2nd grade at Edenville Elementary. When I was eight the family dynamics changed - my mom had another baby girl, I became "Mother's Little Helper". I went to Hillsdale for third through sixth grade. I started writing poetry in fourth grade, using the PenName of Ariel. I still write poetry to this day. It helps me make sense of the truth of life. At the end of sixth grade my parents decided to move us to Oregon and started looking up there for the best place to settle in the fall.We moved outside Salem, Oregon the beginning of September when I was twelve. It was quite an adjustment living in the country where there was not many people close by, afer living in the big city of San Jose. I had very few friends at Judson Middle School & most of high school. Fortunately, In my Sophomore year at Sprague High we moved into town.It was in Drama class that year I met my Soul Sister and very best friend, Shirley Ann Sylsberry. I got involved in Drama. During the summers I would work at Fairview Training Center with the disabled. Left Sprague near the end of my Senior year and got my GED in May. Shirley & I spent the sunner working at a Foster Group Home for elderly along with Shirley. Applied for grants and started college at Chemeketa Communiy College that fall. Got very involved in the theater there. Got engaged - didn't work out. Went to Crater Lake for the summer to heal & work. Went back to Chemeketa but wanted to travel and get out of Salem. So I went to New York ...Expand for more
(on the "Island")as a nanny. Came back home to Salem in the late spring. Got my CNA and started working again at Fairview and then at nursing homes around the Salem, Keizer area the next few years. Met the love of my life; lost the love of my life. Around this time I had a son, Tavis. I developed a problem with my shoulder that needed surgery, so while waiting Went back to Chemeketa and finished my AA degree. I also got active again in Theater. While doing "Annie Get Your Gun", I also met and started dating Arrin Brown. We married three years later and our household now included my stepson, Josh. We got very involved in video production at Capitol Community Television, the public access station. I worked in video production for a while, first at Chemeketa and then for Applied Technical Video.I left ATV to become the Sales Manager at "The Computer Guy". Unfortunately that business expanded too fast and did not last. I then started working for the State; I have been with several agencies over the years. I am now working for Training Services unit of Children's Adult & Family Division, Dept of Human Services as the Statewide VCON Coordinator. Arrin has worked for his company for about 15 years. Our oldest, Josh, now works as a commercial fisherman and is into Skydiving. Our youngest, Tavis, is in his second year at Chemeketa and does Community Theater with Arrin & I. He also has been developing his voice with both the Chemeketa Choir and the Salem Senate-Aires. I am still an avid reader, do community theater and am a member of several poetry groups in the valley. Have had only a few of my poems published but they WERE published. :~)Ah, well!
