Cynthia's Story

Life I'm Cynthia Lawson, or Cindy. I grew up in Lorton when the only thing associated with the town was the prison--which is now closed and being turned into an art center. We didn't even have a traffic light back then. I'm a career legal secretary (30 years and counting) working for a large law firm on K St in Washington, DC. I've been with this particular firm for 8 years. Was married to Jim Dalton (also a MV 1970 graduate) for about 3 years right after high school and we had one daughter, Cheryl, while Jimmy attended Lynchburg College. Then I was married to Gary (Roy) Wedding (also a MV 1970 graduate) for 23 years and had 2 sons, Danny and Donnie. I've been single for almost 11 years and now live back in the City of Alexandria. I love it here. No roommates except my cat, JoJo. Cheryl is a special-ed teacher at Locust Grove Elem. School in Orange County, VA. She's married and has one son Troy, who is highly-functional autistic and a sweetheart; Danny and Donnie are both professional firefighters like their dad. Danny is married and has 2 daughters. Donnie is still single. The boys live in Stafford County where they grew up. Donnie is also the drummer in a local heavy metal band called Wicked Stick -- check them out on MySpace. Their CD was just released in August 2007 and can be purchased through their website. The band mostly performs in the Fredericksburg area but occasionally they appear at Jaxx in Springfield. They opened for Ratt in early September 2007. As you can see, most of my photos are with Donnie. The band has quite a following and people are always taking my picture with him. Many of his friends call me Mom and my Wicked Stick shirt has "Donnie's Mom" on the back. I took ballroom dancing for almost 3 years and would love to take it back up again. I attended both the 10-year and 20-year reunions for the Class of 70. School I graduated from Mt. Vernon in 1970. My class was the last one with Lorton residents, as Hayfield was built and my 4 younger siblings all attended Hayfield, with my sister Evelyn being in their very first graduating class. While at MVHS I was a majorette for 3 years, co-captain when I was a Junior. Then I gave up the baton for chorus - sang all 4 years for Miss Hopkins and as a senior was a second soprano in Concert Choir, Madrigals and Choraleers. Also senior year I was president of the Future Secretaries of A...Expand for more
merica. My Typing I and Shorthand I teacher, Mrs. O'Neal, also taught my mother and was a very sweet lady. My Shorthand II teacher was Miss Provance. She also was the sponsor of Future Secretaries and used to tell us stories about Goldie Hawn, who she used to babysit. She was a very distant cousin of mine and she died of a heart attack one morning as she was driving to school. She was found in her car on the side of the road. It was a very sad time for the Business Dept. Loved my business classes and still occasionally get to use my Gregg shorthand, which is a dying art; loved geometry but hated algebra; wish I'd paid more attention to Geography - to this day I have no sense of direction and consider myself "geographically challenged" but I thought Mr. Merlin was terrific; loved English grammar but didn't care for Shakespeare; wish I'd had a different French II teacher besides Mr. Profitt - he was strange. I learned SO much from Miss Hopkins in the various choral groups that has stayed with me. When I sing with the synagogue choir my eyes are constantly on the conductor, while everyone around me has their noses buried in their music. They miss important cues and it drives me nuts! College Some college, but I'm most proud of my Professional Legal Secretary designation. I studied like mad for about 9 months before taking the 2-day, 7-part exam that is given just twice a year, and this was after I had had several years experience as a legal secretary. The exam is so difficult that you're allowed to pass it in parts, like the CPA exam. I even had to study the Ethics Canons for the attorneys. At the time I took tje exam I was among the just 14% who passed the entire exam at one time. Afterward I felt like everything I had ever learned had been picked from my brain and put on paper and was exhausted for 3 days. About 3 months later the results came in the mail, and I knew I had passed before opening the envelope because it was addressed to "Cynthia E. Wedding, PLS" and I cried. It was an exciting time for me and I had a tremendous feeling of accomplishment. Workplace Lawyers - they are the brunt of many jokes, but in my career I have worked with many attorneys who are extremely dedicated and hard-working and I've spent most of my working life as a legal secretary. For the past 8 years I've been with an international law firm at their DC office on K Street, NW.
