Cynthia's Story

I married very soon after high school to a preacher's son from Hawaii and a year later moved there. A year after that we had our first child which was followed by 2 more. Followed by divorce. I moved back to the mainland for a year and then went back to give the marriage 1 more shot but it didn't work. Left to Washington state and finished raising children. I now have 2 grand kids ages 2 and 8 who I just finished visiting in eastern Washington for the holidays. After my kids were grown I came back to Hawaii and became a Merchant Marine as part of the first fully American fagged cruise ship in fifty years. The "Pride of Aloha." I hurt my knee and ankle and no longer could do the climbing that was required and it wasn't operable so I took a job with a family here. I worked as housekeeper / childcare and was able to see a lot of wonderful things, had Lot's of experiences and met so many types of people from so many cultures and lifestyles that otherwise I might not have been able to. Life is a such an amazing kaleidoscope of stories and events! As the nanny, I've been to Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland, South America, seen glaciers, the Horn, Chile, Argentina, Patagonia, and more penguins, condors, emu, ostrich, lama's and their cousins, the beginning and the end of the world as claimed by two different countries. I got to explore some of our country like Boston, San Francisco, New York, California's wine country, and bit of Canada. I got to get know and care for people that I otherwise wouldn't have and had a great time knowing and loving some wonderful children. So all in all I've been blessed. I still see the children and will watch them as much as I can. I now watch 1 child and will be watching 3 more soon. I have a wonde...Expand for more
rful family of both friends and relatives so I'm very lucky. Still, every so often I think about that other part of my life, often not so great, there was a lot of misery, caused by people who really didn't care at the time, who they hurt for no other reason other than they could for attention, gossip and so on. I can only hope that those people grew out of it. The far better memories come to mind though, almost totally hiding the dark ones. They are of people that so impressed me. There were wonderful talented people. Both these teachers Harold Wells (art and pottery) and John Cunningham (stagecraft and Drama)I'm sure were idolized by far more than just me but to me they were nothing short of miracles. Their talent shone so bright, it made you think there had to be something out there to look forward to and be excited about. They gave guidance to me when needed in uplifting ways. I'm sure everyone must remember and classmates Tom Young, who's cheerful smiling face lifted everyone's spirits! He did have a shop I wondered into once in Sumner called The Golden Rule of Teddy Bears. It turned out good for him, he had a wife and children and judging by his still sunny smile (which Washington should be glad of) he was very much in love with both. Penny graduated before me but I thought her performance of Joan of Ark still shines in my memory as one of the best performances ever! I wonder if she continued in acting? Still "all" brought awe in the talent, diversity of qualities, magic in the performance, a sense of belonging in teamwork and, most often, the building blocks, that I drew from in my life. I bet that a lot of others were influenced by the people, and friends, lost track of in the haste of getting on with life. I wonder what all your stories are?
