Cynthia (Cindy)'s Story

. . . After our awesome graduation from WHS in May 1971, I moved to KCMO for 6 months, then enlisted in the Navy, and served 3 years of active duty at US Navy bases in Maryland, Tennessee, and California. After my Navy enlistment was up, I enlisted in the US Army and served as a recruiter for a little over 3 years. I've worked for five law firms in CA, WA, and MO, working my way up from System Administrator to Personnel Director. My last employer was Government Employees Health Association (GEHA), the 2nd largest provider of health insurance and dental insurance forUS federal employees - and an outstanding place to work. After more than 19 years of service as a Human Resources professional, I retired from GEHA unexpectedly last year at 57 due to a septic staph infection from which I am still recovering. I was diagnosed about 10 years ago with Psoriatic Arthritis (similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis), and haven't been able to resume taking all of my treatments because they wipe out my immune system. During 2010, I took medical leave from my job to have a second total knee replacement. Unfortunately I developed a whopping case of MSSA, Medicillin Susceptible Staphylococcus Aureus. I had fevers up to 108 and was re-admitted four times after the jinitial joint replacement surgery. I was discharged with a PIC line and on IV antibiotics three different times; I lost more than 50 pounds, and am still working to get my strength back. After spending 42 years working, it's been difficult for me to make the transition to that of a retired disabled person. I'm glad to be at home and very glad to be alive. When I'm stronger, I plan to return to school to finish up some undergrad classes and then embark on my Master of Science in Psychology. I met John Saavedra in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1975; he was the Administrative Officer for the same recruiting command I was assigned to; we ma...Expand for more
rried in 1978. Over the last 36 years, we've lived in California, Washington State, Kansas, and Missouri. We have twin daughters, a stepson, and 9 adopted special-needs children. We currently have 8 children at home, 5 of them foster children. "Home" is an open-plan brick-front ranch on 5 acres in Raymore, MO, with a big old in-ground pool, small gardens, and a lot of trees. Our son Zack has been busy for the last year trimming trees, planting trees, creating flower beds, and a raised garden box for my kitchen garden. Zack, who was a combat medic assigned to the 102nd Airborne, was deployed to Iraq between 2007 and 2008. . . . I love "Johnny," every one of the 307 children we've raised or helped to raise, our 9 grandchildren, and our big old house, My favorite pasttimes are traveling, reading nonfiction, and writing. I'm learning to play guitar and hope it'll help my brain to heal after weeks of 105-106 degree fevers last summer. I miss the Central Coast of California and am going on another "beach trip" with my husband in a few weeks. I see my sister Laurel a couple of times a year; she's a successful artist and has a home and studio in the desert near Las Cruces. I aee brother Dan several times a year and always leave him laughing - he really should be on stage. He works full time, writes a a magazine column, and has responded beautifully to becoming a grandfather! My father, Lee Farber, taught industrial arts and electronics classes at WHS from 1964 to about 1985, then served as an instructor at a technical college in Iowa and at KCK Community College. Dad retired about 6 years ago, and passed away from undiagnosed cancer in February 2010. My mother, Ruth, is in a nursing home near where I live. A FRIENDLY HELLO! TO ALL OF YOU. I HOPE LIFE HAS BEEN GOOD TO YOU AND THAT YOU HAVE GOOD MEMORIES OF WHS. PLEASE SEND A MESSAGE WHEN YOU CAN, I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. Cindy.
