Cynthia Gray:

CLASS OF 1969
Wilmington, DE

Cynthia's Story

Workplace I left Delaware (and the University of...)in 1972 with my sister Nancy and Marty Cook. Nancy and I got jobs with Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) and Marty worked for one of the "downtown Boston" hospitals. We all lived in an apartment in Central/(Harvard) Square. I transferred to ADL/San Francisco in December 1977 and lived out there for two years. Needless to say I had a wonderful time in SF and traveled throughout the state and up into Oregon. I came back to ADL/Cambridge in September 1979 and was there till 2002 when, unfortunately, the company went BANKRUPT. (And, we all lost our pensions when the company went under!!!) My division of 300 or so technical (engineers, chemists, etc.) people was bought and renamed TIAX, LLC, but again...unfortunately... the company had some very bad times and 40 of us had to be laid off---that was September of 2002. It was a very sad happening as the company was like a family and I spent most of my working life there (including many weekends and nights!!!) The good news is we have an incredible Alumni Association with over 600 people and we all get together every three months or so for a meeting/social and we have a hugh party in one of the Boston hotels every September which is so much fun!!! Because my job was so stressful and took a lot of time out of my life I decided to take a year off to rest before decidi...Expand for more
ng what to do in my next career! (By the way, there is a wonderful book called "Are you a Corporate Refugee." By Ruth Luban--really helped me get through the process of losing a job and believe me it is a process!!! I started getting ready in 1999 to be laid off which was hard and good at the same time. I was able to save a pot of money which I am using in my year off.) I spent 2 months in Delray Beach, Florida this past winter which was definitely the place to be weather wise!! I also travelled between my houses in Buck's Harbor, Maine, Winchester, MA and Brewster (Cape Cod), MA. I have made up my mind that I am going to try a personal service business on my own come September. I will base it out of Cape Cod as it's a great place to be. Hopefully, I will be able to do this business down in Florida for three months a year cause the winters in New England really suck!! So we'll see what happens...........stay tuned.....WELL...it's now October 2004 and I am just celebrating my first year owning a business called "OKssionally Yours" for the Occasional Job! It's been a great year getting the business off the ground. There is definitely a market for this type of business on Cape Cod. I have a business partner which has really helped grow the business. She is also a 30-year alumni from Arthur D. Little, Inc. I truly do not miss the "corporate" life at all!!!!
