Debra 's Story
Life
For 30 odd years I've studied animal behaviour (including humans!!) and am a happy academic. In 2002, after a parting of the ways with my partner of 17 years, I moved to Western Australia where I currently live and teach Biological Anthropology at the Univ of WA. Recently, I learned to drive a 4WD down rock faces and through water and mud and had a great time navigating using GPS. Never too old to add new skills! I was lucky to spend a couple of months in 2007 in very remote tropical forests studying primates. Very tough, very remote, and beautiful beyond imagination.
My daughter attends Australia National Univ in Canberra and I am missing her good company but am happy that she is pursuing her dreams (she studies law, spanish and arabic). My son graduated from UCSC in history and works for Amazon in the legal department as well as working in music (drummer and production) when he has the time. nto "Toy Soldiers." He is also a political activist of whom I am quite proud. My 12 year old labrador housemate recently died and I still miss her.
I'm politically progressive (since Liberals down-under are really more like Republicans) and a committed environmentalist. The novel I recommend most often is Adhaf Souif's "Map of Love."
I love to experience different cultures and currently have research interests in East Timor and Indonesia. A conference in Marrakech recently pulled me to Morocco where I was lucky to experience a night under the Saharan sky. Life IS what you make of it.
2010 was an epic year in all senses. Many changes, some of which I would not have wished; but life is not as we wish it but as we take and transform it. Parts of life close and other parts open. To take off in flight, one must face into the wind. I still take some late nights to write poetry and I value the people who share their lives with me and allow me to share mine with them. Peace.
