Dale's Story
Life
NOW: I'm an historian by education and profession and have worked for the Center for Army Lessons Learned at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, since 1993.
PEACE CORPS: I was in the Peace Corps in Swaziland from November 1974 to September 1978, departing shortly after the nation celebrated its 10th anniversary of independence. I spent most of that time working as a librarian at the University of Swaziland at Kwaluseni. I made friends with a wonderful family who treated me as one of their own. In the summer of 2007, I was delighted to get together with one of my brothers from this family, Muzie, who was then working in the Swaziland Embassy in Wash., D.C. I had not seen him in 29 years.
SANTA CLARA: I have written on the seven years that I spent at Santa Clara Elementary School. I contacted all of my living teachers -- Miss Sabin, Mrs. Gwaltney, and Mr. Broyles -- and student teachers -- Mr. Kono and Miss Grant. Of course some of their names have changed. I met Mrs. Gwaltney in person in 2006 (and several times since) and Miss Sabin in 2007. Mr. Broyles died in 2009.
COLIN KELLY: I have also written about my three years at Colin Kelly Junior High School. I have seen my 9th grade social living teacher, Dr. Glade Howell, and my 7th grade music teacher, Mr. Estley Schick, in the past few years. Within the past year, I've had telephone conversations with Mr. Bill Walkenshaw, my 8th grade social liv...Expand for more
ing teacher, and Mr. Boyd Morgan, my PE teacher.
MITCHELTREE: I have read all of the published writings of Tom Mitcheltree, a member of NEHS '64. My favorite Mitcheltree mystery, DATAMAN, has a character named Walkinshaw. Probably the greatest teacher that I had at Colin Kelly Junior High School was Mr. Bill Walkenshaw, 8th social studies teacher, and Tom Mitcheltree was in that class. I have actually talked a few of my friends into reading some of Tom Mitcheltree's books. I'm looking forward to Tom's next book.
NORTH EUGENE HIGH SCHOOL: I have communicated with my high school Latin teacher, Dr. Duane Adcock, in the past year.
NEAL STEINHAUER: No, I am not Neal Steinhauer, NEHS class of 1962 and UO class of 1967, nor is he my brother -- my brother is Loren, NEHS class of 1962. Neal's father is my first cousin. His older brother, Mark, class of 1960, was to go to Germany to visit our relatives, but an accident just before our scheduled departure in 2007 prevented him from accompanying me. That was the fourth time that I have visited my grandfather's birthplace and my relatives in the Old Country.
UNIVERSITY OF OREGON: I always gravitate to the library when I visit my alma mater. I'm not much of a Duck sports fan.
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA: I was saddened by the death of Professor R. Don Higginbotham in 2008. I will always remember his seminar and his service on my dissertation committee.
