Dallas's Story

Life The meteorology thing did not work out for me, and I ended up following in the footsteps of my dad, as I am an Air Traffic Controller. Its an absolutely wonderful job, except that it's in Albuquerque. I know people say that ABQ is a beautiful place, and it is...but its not Texas. I hope someday soon to transfer back to The Lone Star State, but I do work for the government, so who knows how long that could take. I like to travel ALOT, visiting friends I met at an ATC school, coming back to Texas, and I also go to many places on my own. Most of the trips always seem to have something to do with baseball...I wonder why. ABQ is not the best place for a social life, and if I ever have a family, I certainly wouldn't want to raise my kids here. Feel free to say howdy! College My college story goes like this. I spent a year and a half at UNT, transfered to OU (GO SOONERS!!!!) for a semester, found out meteorology wasn't for me, went back to UNT for a year(?), decided to do ATC and finished at Northlake. I have enough credits to have a Bachelors degree, but I only have an Associates. Then I went to an ATC school for 4 months in Minnesota, which was the best college time of my lif...Expand for more
e (if only I could have been there for 4 years). So many great memories there, but nothing could ever beat getting the whole class doing the wave while the teacher was giving us a lesson. She was so focused she never noticed. That was just outstanding! Workplace Well, I started at Chick-fil-A as a Junior in high school, at that ended up being the one constant through all the years of college. After working my way up to Store Manager, I finally left after six and a half years (praise the Lord). Upon completion of the ATC school in August 2002, I was guaranteed a job with the FAA at some point. The letter came in September '02, SIX days before I had to start in Albuquerque. I gotta say that was the worst week of my life. Then began the long rigorous training process that ended on May 26, 2005. I am now a fully certified Air Traffic Controller, and I love my job. To answer the FAQ's, no its not stressful, and I don't work at an airport either. My airspace is over the Texas Panhandle and NE New Mexico. We keep the airplanes separated at high altitudes. So if you ever go to any of the western states, Amarillo, or points beyond, there's a good chance I might be talking to your plane!
