Dan's Story
Life
After graduating college, I moved to Fulham, London, UK. I worked as a cellar master in an award-winning British pub, and subsequently became a big "beer geek", and even wrote some articles for beer enthusiast magazines.
I returned from the UK in 1992, and spent the next several years working a variety of jobs, eventually ending up in the financial industry. In 1997, I left the financial services sector and taught myself web development and design. I've been doing web-related stuff ever since. Currently I am employed in the public sector, managing and developing web sites for a state agency.
My free time is spent writing/playing music (most recently, flamenco guitar), reading, running, biking and spending time with friends and family. I also volunteer my web skills for progressive/human rights/left-leaning political causes. Google "dan ballek music" to find my personal website, where I've posted examples of my music and web sites.

School
Truthfully, I don't remember much. My life was a big mess. Had I known then what I know now, I would have sought treatment for my bipolar disorder (also known as "manic depression"). I am much happier (much closer to "normal") now (well, normal enough, I guess).
College
Graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1991. Much of it is a blur, unfortunately. Majored in PoliSci, and also spent three years working on the college newspaper as an editor, columnist and food/music critic. I also played guitar, keys and sang in a number of pick-up bands playing everything from variety/top-40 to goth to country, even. I still love all kinds of music and play whenever I get the chance.
Workplace
Skilled tradesman (cellar master in the UK), factory worker, performing musician and songwriter, food service manager, registered representative with the NASD (financial services), and now IT/web development.
Next stop: maybe clown college?
