Dan's Story
Life
'86-'88 Graduated high school. Went to work as a shop worker for a conveyor manufacturer. Started taking night classes at Prarie State college. Bought my first car '65 Rambler (still in my moms back yard today! wanta buy it?). Hated working. Went to Lewis University.
'89-'91 Tuition to high at Lewis, went back to Prarie State, working part time. As I was saving money to go to ISU, laid off from job Aug '90, recruiter next door to unemployment office, joined USMC Mar '91. Became radio operator. Had lots of fun in Thiland, participated in Operation Restore Hope Somalia '92-'93. Out of service '94. Started working for conveyor manufacturer again. Met Kathy Tanner, married '95, had Kyle the same year. '96-'00 Worked up from shop worker to CNC programmer, worked up to becoming a machine designer. Had McKayla Dec '97. Start school again to get degree in mechanical design. Changed jobs to Design Engineer.
'01-Now Got AS in mech design it only took 4 years of night classes. Raven was born Jun '99. Work in Romeoville IL for Fleetwood Inc. We manufacture can/beverage machines for companys all over the globe (Pepsi,Coke,Campbells) Lost my father to cancer May '07. I'm like the rest of the class of '86. I work hard to support my family, appreciate and make the best with what I have, and not demand of what I think I deserve. My/families health is good. And if your Kids stay healthy, you're already a Millionare. I enjoy everyday, because moving into 40 is becoming an eye opening experience and after watching my father slowly dwindle to half himself and have his life sucked out at 71, as he fought to keep living, I owe him to try and live to the fullest and maybe do...Expand for more
good and leave a little legacy of my own in this world that seems to get more difficult with each passing year. I can't wait to see the class of '86 in August. Send me a message.
Workplace
Started at $5.00/hr buffing steel 10hrs a day in 1987. 20 years later I'm using the latest computer programs to develope and design machines in multi-million dollar projects. The United States had a hold on the world market for material handling machines for over 60 years. The world is much different today, foreign compitition from europe is ferce. Prices have to be kept lower to compete. Streamlining engineering design and process is my main focus in everything I do. Never drawn production on a drafting board, but even using a computer with 2-d AutoCad is dead. Solidworks 3D desgin is the future if the United States is going to stay ahead. I work in Romeoville, which at first in 2000 wasn't bad when gas was $1.24/gallon, now at $3.00+. I need to move closer to work, maybe the Libertyville area.
Military
Had my 23rd birthday first week of boot camp. I was already considered the old man of the platoon, but I was still able to out run most of those young 18-19 year olds at the time. Already had a sense of discipline before I entered which made boot camp easier, but disapointed that it was nothing like "Full Metal Jacket". It was great to see the world and travel, but give me the good 'ol USA any day. The months I was in Somalia gave me deep patriotic feel for our great country which is truly the freeist in the world, 9-11 only reinforced that feeling. God bless our troops in Iraq/Afganistan, may they come home safe physically and mentally for the rest of their lives.
