Dan's Story

January 2008 Oh it's so hard to find the beginning when there are so many, but I'll try my best to cover 46 years of change, growth, happiness, heartache, education, marriage, family, career, and travel since high school. There were many friendships and memories from my formative years in Morgan Park beginning with Esmond and then MPHS that aren't as clear in my mind today as they once were, but to this day I look back at those tender, carefree years with fondness. I have to say it was very hard to sever those high school ties after graduation and they weren't intentional. Some of us left the neighborhoods that we grew up in to attend college or join the military and never returned to the old neighborhood, except for brief periods to try and reconnect. I stuck around Chicago for a few years after high school working at Midway Airport to be close to my love for flying anything that had wings and an engine. In 1963 I joined the Navy without any expectations other than I knew the Navy held the keys that opened the doors of the world that I couldn't open on my own. In 1968 I transfered from the Naval Air Station at Keflavik, Iceland to reserve duty at NAS Glenview, hoping to find a job flying. None were to be had. That was a tough year to be in Chicago as were all of the remaining war years. But other cities were dealing with the same issues, besides I still had a military obligation and Chicago was the only home I really knew and loved. 1968 was the year I returned to school and tried for the better part of the next five years to separate myself from a world that became in...Expand for more
creasingly more hostile and buried myself in studies. The seventies turned out to be the decade of change. I married a pretty young gal from Boston in 1971 and in the span of the next seven years we had four children, two girls and two boys. I had a brief career teaching high school after we got married and knew from day one that it wasn't going to last. I quit teaching in 1972 after finishing graduate school and luckily found a career in the private sector. In 1978 I changed jobs and moved the family to Minneapolis, where most of us still call home. The 1980s were the active years and as the kids grew so did the challenges. The kids were a blessing but at the same time the demands of raising kids just seemed to be so much greater than what I remember my parents had to endure...(:-) The 1990's had it's ups and downs, starting with a divorce and my having to raise the kids solo. No sweat...admittedly I died a thousand deaths. All of us made the best of what life handed us and despite the hard knocks we maintained a healthy attitude and outlook on life. I continued to fly recreationally through the years and now that I'm an empty-nester the skys are mine. After my youngest finished school, I decided it was time for me to hang up the corporate job. I retired in 2000 and ever since, I've been busier than ever with school, travel and just doing whatever strikes a positive cord. So here I am, finally made it to age 65 and wondering what next. Life has been good. I hope it has been for you too and welcome any and all contact from former classmates. Dan Carroll Blaine, MN
