Daniel's Story
Hillsboro High for 3 years, then to Pearl for one year. That was mandated by the Civil Rights Bussing laws, which I thought were going to destroy my Senior year. Turned out go be one of the best things that ever happened to me. I learned how unaware I was of the deep-seated racial issues in Nashville, and unaware of my own "white privilege". And how interesting/enriching it was having friends walking very different paths. Ever since, I have always tried to live and work among diverse people from all backgrounds. (an aside...That's one of the reasons I love Los Angeles. We have all the spectrum, never a dull moment, and the overwhelming majority here embrace diversity. My current friends look more to your character, less to your surface (good thing, because my looks aren't what they used to be!)
After high school, the tough choice was "which career". In both my parent's lineage there have been a wide variety of professions, and many "jack of all trades". I was considering 1) Musician, 2) Actor, 3) Physician/Psychiatrist, 4) Air Force pilot, 5) Teacher, and I chose 6) Engineer in Computer Science and Electronics. Honestly, because it paid well, and it could finance most of the others as hobbies. And computers were easier to understand than people.
After College, worked in Huntsville AL for ~20 years on the NASA Space Shuttle and Spacelab programs. Lots of Domestic and Foreign travel and lots of cool projects. Got promoted into management, but never really liked the politics.
By the late 80s, stress of corporate world was draining me, and my marriage of 7 years was crumbling. Then, I got caught in one of the cycles of Layoffs so common in Aerospace. And my m...Expand for more
arriage ended with my spouse having an affair with one of my best friends. Yes, a classic soap-opera moment! Definitely a low point in my life.
So, I decided to move back to Nashville for a job in Healthcare with a start-up company. I was designing and programming computer systems and happy again! And the Company grew like crazy, stock options quadrupled and my finances were back on track.
In the 90's I went for a big change and moved to Los Angeles to grow my avocation of Film and Television acting. I remember selling all my stuff and driving cross-country with everything I owned in one car load. I felt so free, like I was back in High School again! I love LA, the best city in the world to practice the craft of acting in the TV/Film medium. Thousands of talented people and hundreds of interesting projects every day. Go to this website DANIELGRAVES "dot" INFO to see some film/tv projects I have been fortunate to work on.
I met a wonderful lady and married in 2000 (which is great because if i remember the current year, then I know how many years I've been married!)
In 2015 I started a home-based business, as a Software Developer and Trainer. It had just the right amount of technical challenge and face-to-face customer interaction. See our company website at DATABASE-USA "dot" COM
Plans for the future?...When COVID hit, i retired. And now I'm taking certifications to be a middle-school Science teacher. This is that final third of life where its about "giving back". I am thankful to have good health, a happy life and am looking forward to several more decades of adventures.
