Dan's Story
Life
Married (first and only time) for 20 yrs to Lena (we met when I lived in So Cal; she was attending CSULB at the time. I tricked her into getting her Masters at SJSU which was closer to me!) We have two boys ages 12 yrs, and 10 yrs old (Daniel Patrick and Robert Michael Law). I've worked as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Firefighter Engineer, and now Fire Captain for the last 25 yrs and love the job!. After high school I attended Mission College and played a little soccer there, bartended and saw a lot of old classmates, attended SJSU, then CSULA. Other than that I have been just a regular guy! I still live in Santa Clara and bought the house right next door to where I grew up. My little brother lives next door now, my middle brother lives two blocks down, and my parents live one mile away in old Santa Clara: God has been good to bless a fool like me!
P.S. about the best thing I ever did was to meet Lena and have kids. I love those guys dearly !
College
The best college roommate ever has got to be "Blind Willie". He is a life long friend that I met in the University Pub on Halloween night. He now works in Indiana for the IRS and is the second greatest Republican I know next to Ronny Reagan!
Workplace
My work history: As far as I am...Expand for more
concerned it started when I became a Firefighter in 1988 I worked at a number of different jobs (bartender, sales,....) as I worked on the 10 year college plan. I graduated from CSULA majoring in Fire Protection Technology and Engineering. That lead me to my current and last job as a Firefighter with the city of Salinas. I currently hold the position of Fire Captain and love every minute of it. Prior to that I held the position of Engineer (the guy that drives and pumps water), and Firefighter (the guy with the nozzle).
Why I love doing this is hard to say. I can tell you that 99% of all Firefighters love their job, it's a brotherhood that has a special bond. I saw that on 9/11 when 343 brothers paid the ultimate price. You won't get rich but you sure as heck can provide for the family, and that's what really counts.
I now live in Santa Clara and commute to Salinas five times (48 hour shifts) a month to work. This work schedule allows me to spend a great deal of time with my family!
If you ever visit Salinas come by Station #2 ("The house of Pain") on the corner of W. Laurel and N. Main. I'll give ya the tour and take you for a ride on the red fire engine.
A Margarita on the rock (Patrone) and a dry aged steak on the grill!!
