Dan's Story

OK, I'm going to try and avoid boring you with a bunch of drivel. Life just doesn't go as one plans, or so it seems. Since good old Central High I tried my hand at Electrical Engineering at UNL - not really what I had in mind. So after floundering for a bit, I thougth I had better recharge my batteries and do something that I actually liked. So I changed my major to Art. Did well with that, but what could I do with an Art degree? Well, I could teach - my family was in education and I really didn't want to go there. Or I could be a starving artist - also not sounding like a great idea. So while I was trying to decide what to do, I ran out of money. So much for college. Off to work I went. While floundering again, but this time in the job market, I went back to school in the evenings for Electronics Technology - a much better fit. Found a wonderful woman (some of you may remember her as Mary Steiner - class of '77) to spend the rest of my life with and to have two great kids - David and two and a half years later Liz. Got a job with a computer store as their Service Manager. I then started teaching computer classes for them (I know, I know! I said I wouldn't go there, but the money was good). Then I became their Learning Center Manager. Left the retail environment (thank god!). Then opened up a training center for another company. Seeing what they were making off of me I decided to leave and start my own training company with a friend of mine. We did that for about 3 or 4 years - growing from just the two of us to having 8 employees - before I decided to leave . . . . . . Eventually ended up at UNO running the networks for a d...Expand for more
epartment under the College of Business Administration. And, yes, I continued to teach computer classes with them. That lasted for ten years and then came to an abrupt halt with budget cutbacks - in the long run, probably the best thing that could have happened to me even though it seemed so very far from that at the time. Oh yah, shortly before that I had gone through that yucky thing called divorce after 20 years of marriage. Various jobs doing computer consulting work took my time for a number of years, but other than that, fairly uneventful. So currently I just put in about 3 days a week programming for Blue Cross Blue Shield of NE. The bulk of my time, though, is spent pursuing my art career. I do art shows around the region, I am a member of a coop gallery called the Old Market Artists Gallery (or the OMA Gallery) in the lower level of the Passage Way in Omaha's historic Old Market, and my studio is in Hot Shops Art Center. Most of my art is wood oriented - I turn bowls, carve sculptures, and create wooden wall art. I also teach woodturning classes - yes, again the teaching thing! David lives with me and spends much of his time entering his '95 Volkswagen Jetta VR6 in various auto shows and competitions around the region. His car club won best club in the USACi World Finals at the Qwest Center earlier this year (2008) and he won best in class at World of Wheels that was also at the Qwest Center. Liz just got married to a great guy that is in the Army. So they moved to Junction City, Kansas since Joe is stationed at Fort Rielly. I know I've forgotten a lot, but that's good for you since you didn't have to wade through any more.
