Dan's Story

Life Somehow I ended up in Texas, moving to Abilene in 1998. I taught theology and philosophy at Hardin-Simmons University, especially as a part of a new divinity school. I have really enjoyed the school and the western landscape. Other than not having many trees, Abilene reminds me a lot of Springfield in the 60s! I taught at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, for fourteen years and left behind a lot of basketball. I'm still trying to get into the craze for football here. My wife, Beth, whom I met at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, grew up in Kansas City and thought Abilene was a little small; she has enjoyed our move to Fort Worth in 2018. Our daughter, Carrie, did not enjoy it at all in the beginnin...Expand for more
g, since we moved here after her freshman year in Louisville, but since then she has at least accommodated it and ended up going to Hardin-Simmons. She later moved to Fort Worth for an accounting job, taking our two grandkids with her! A few years ago, the university ran into financial trouble and offered generous buyouts. I took it, so Beth and I moved in with our daughter and grandkids! We built a house together, and it has actually worked out well. It has been a blessing to be with the grandkids and their friends during their high school years. I still teach for Hardin-Simmons half-time and at some other places here and there. I hope to keep teaching as long as my mind works! (smile) I'm still trying to understand God, but it's a tall order.
