Dan's Story

Life I can't believe it has been 50 years since leaving Central. Where has the time gone? The older I get the more I think about my childhood including high school. It seems that my memories are beginning to become more clear....or perhaps I am beginning to imagine things :-) Here's a quick update on my life....if you care... Went into the Army for 4 years right out of Central. Spent all of my time in the Far East in Military Intelligence. Married Linda Rice (Walker) in 67 while on leave from the Army. We were divorced in the early 80's but have two wonderful children: Dan Jr., who is 47 and a parole officer in Pennsylvania and Kelli, 40, who owns her own consulting company. She lives in Charlotte, NC with her hubby, Ben, and daughter, Sloane. Dan Jr. and his wife Bonnie have given us two wonderful grandchildren: Daniel III who is 17 and Delaney who is 12. I remarried in 1986 to Maureen Chang (now Walker). Maureen is an architect. Since Maureen is Chinese the kids all look Hawaiian which allows us to get local discounts when we visit Hawaii :-) I joined Lazarus Department Stores right after college (OSU Class of 73) in business. I was there for 9 years then moved to General Mills in New York. I joined Gap, Inc. in 1985 and moved to California. At Gap, Inc. I served as their Chief of Human Resources until 92. I tried to early retire but got restless...Expand for more
and started a consulting company which took me to 1998. In 1998 I started working with Steve Jobs, CEO at Apple, and became his Global Human Resources Chief and had a blast rebuilding the company and the Apple brand. I am proud of what the company has achieved. I retired in 2005 because I had been commuting between Silicon Valley and Southern Cal the entire time. Since my retirement from Apple I have launched a series of startup companies. Lots of hard work but lots of fun. My free time (what little there is) is spent with the kids. We live in San Clemente, CA which is is at the southern tip of Orange County. The kids have all grown and moved away so...we are empty nesters. One of the twins, Lana, is at New York University (Stern School of Business) and is on the NYU Volleyball Team. The other twin, Kate, is at (believe it or not) a Pre-Med student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. My middle child, Luke, served 6 years in the Coast Guard after high school and is now in college as well. He's attending the University of Southern California. Even though I've lived away from Columbus most of my life I'm still "just another kid from "The Bottoms".....and proud of it. I would love to be in touch with any of my old classmates and have reached out to a number of you. I wish all of my fellow Pirates the best and hope that your lives are good.
