Dana's Story

Life Since graduation, went to VA Wesleyan College in VA Beach for 1st 2 years, then transferred to JMU to complete last 2 years of a Mass Communication (Journalism) degree. Got a job at a weekly newspaper near Harrisonburg, wrote stories & took photos for nearly 2 years. Then, took a 9-to-5 job with a Bridgewater lawyer for about 2 1/2 years. Next, was a bookkeeper for an evangelist (similar to Billy Graham's organization) in H'burg for nearly 4 years. The new millennium took me to London, England for 2 years to live out a dream as a missionary to the diverse cultures living there - I absolutely loved this experience and I miss my "home" and "family" back there! Was back in VA for about a year and a half as I pursued long-term overseas work, followed by two years of Arabic language learning in Jordan. Lived in my last overseas locale for about 3-1/2 years, all the while adjusting to cultural and language differences. It was a whole different kettle of fish in that part of the world, that's for sure! They just couldn't imagine what it was like back in our beautiful Shenandoah Valley (which I missed very much, due to its lush greenness as compared to the prevailing brown dustiness over there). I' was back working in my chosen field of journalism, so I was very happy to be assisting a very poor nation with my skills and talents. During that time, experienced an incredible hiking/rambling weekend in the mountains, going from 4,000-ft elevations to 8,000-ft elevations, so some pretty drastic differences as we traveled along the windy mountain roads (you don't want to look down over the road's edge!). We literally had our heads in the clouds all weekend long, as the clouds hovered both below us in the deep mountain clefts/crevices, as well as lingering on the mountaintops above us. Absolutely incredible! I got some great photos of it. God's ha...Expand for more
ndiwork in a most inhospitable living environment is just amazing. These people live hard lives, but they are blessed by His beauty every day, so in that way, they're most fortunate. Flew to the US spring 2006 for my best high school friend Sara Williams's wedding in Staunton, so that was a wonderful time to see her extended family members again and celebrate her marriage to Sam Thompson (as well as pop in to see some other friends in that area). While I was single, living/working overseas afforded me many opportunities to travel and see the world (some very unique parts). In fall 2006, I set foot on my 5th continent (Australia and then New Zealand), so only South America & Antarctica (highly doubtful, especially since I HATE brutally cold weather) to go! But I still have many, many more places I want to see, visit and explore, which fulfills my love of photography too. Couldn't make the 20-year reunion (I can't believe I'm writing that number!), but I hope to see friends again sometime somewhere or at least connect by e-mail. God bless each of you! = ) As per God's perfect timing, I married my wonderful husband and life partner in the summer of 2009 and now am back in the US living out West. We spent our first two years in the Phoenix, AZ area and then moved to the inland Northwest area of Idaho (near Spokane, WA), where we've been for a year and a half (as of this update). After living in desert-y climes for awhile, this northern area reminds me a LOT of the Shenandoah Valley, so I've enjoyed the changing leaves in autumn (and a little snow--although VA's gotten more than we have). We do miss the palm trees though. We're also the proud parents of a four-and-a-half-year-old--cat! My husband is allergic to most cats, but not so much to this one, a female Calico, so we feel blessed that God gave us this not-so-little creature to love.
