Daniel's Story
Life
After graduating high school, I immediately found work in the restaurant business. This funded my college years, earning me a degree in marketing. I was hoping to go into advertising, but careers in this field were elusive. I switched gears taking business administration and management courses. I continued working in the restaurant industry, eventually becoming general manager of an IHOP here in Mesa, then for a local Mexican grill. Thanks to our nation's wonderful president, I was laid off, and remained unemployed for 10 months. Eventually, after the humiliation (of going from making nearly $40,000 annual salary plus bonuses to earning zero dollars, nearly losing my house and sleeping at bus stops) I focused all my efforts on, and eventually landed a job with, the city's #1 employer, Wal-Mart. Meanwhile, my former employer has closed down three of it's five remaining locations due to the lovely economy. In 1992, I moved down here to Mesa, AZ with then girlfriend and Richards High School Class of 1985 Graduate, Kathy Downing. We would eventually marry in front of Buckingham Fountain in 1995. We have no children and it is biologically impossible for this to change, unless we adopt. She now, at the young age of 37, is suffering from Reflex Sypathetic Dystrophy, a neurological disorder rendering her extremely weak and in much pain most of the time. This added to my own neurological partial-complex seizure disorder, which I've had since age two, makes for a challanging relationship. Both of us now have clinical depression and between us, keep Walgreen's in business (one prescription alone is over $400 per month.)
I just lost my mother earlier this year (1/31/2004). She was more of a mother to Kathy than her own biological mother, who continues to isolate herself from the rest of us.
