Daniel's Story

Life I am married to a Florida girl, Barbara, and have been for 30 years. We had three children Adam, Luke, and Caleb. Adam my oldest died on September 13, 2003. MY other two Luke 22 and Caleb 20 are fine. While Luke and I struggle a great deal with Adams death, Caleb is fine. Adam got a hold of some methadone and died after being in a coma for 13 days. You ALL listen to me. Stay on top of your kids, know what they are doing every single second. While I knew Adam smoked dope, as a lot of us did, I guess that wasnt enough. I will carry the guilt and heartache of not being proactive in this circumstance for the rest of my life. I have cried more the last two years than you would think is humanly possible and the trips to the cemetary are devastating to me. LOVE your kids, be a pain in the butt where drugs and drinking are concerned. I have had to learn a lesson that slowly kills me everyday and I dont want any of you to experience this utter despair and feeling of failure as a parent. My son is DEAD and there is not anything that I can do about it. I hate to be so depressing in a bio BUT I dont want anyone to experience this because there is absolutely nothing worse than losing a child and preventive measures now will prevent despair later. Tell them you love them everyday EVEN if you are mad at them. If any of you pray please pray for me and Luke because we both are really former shells of ourself and need GODS mercy although I feel he has abandoned me. I always wanted to be a pro baseball player when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a reachable idea. As it turns out, they were not quite right. 'When stressed, I get on my lawnmower with my headphones jam and mow or get on my bike and pedal to exhauston If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have prepared, researched, and xanax to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero growing up was Mickey Mantle. He was the type of player that I wanted to emulate. As a adult, Ronald Reagan. He was a shining example of patrionism, a belief in GOD, and strong conservative views After I joined the military, I lived in San Antonio for 3 months and after basic training went to Shepperd AFB, in Wichita Falls, Texas. When training was completed, I was stationed in Valdosta, Georgia where I completed my military obligations. I then moved to Hendersonville, Tn. I lived there 3 years and moved to Landover, Maryland where I lived for 6 months. I really didn't like the area so I moved to Nashville. I met my wife and we moved to Murfreesboro to get my BA in education. Upon graduating, I moved to Smyrna and taught at Thurman Francis Jr. High from 1982 to 1985. My wife wanted to move home so we moved to Bradenton, Fl and I got a job at Bayshore High School where I have taught since 1985. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Leslie Spradling , because she has had to deal with the same painful hardships that I have. Having someone to talk to that knows what NOT to say is very important.. If the Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Bucs, or the Tampa Bay Lightning are on, I am watching. I pretty much have the MLB channel on most of the time. College football is also a favorite. I prefer to watch Florida State, Vanderbilt, Nebraska and Alabama but when there not any game will do. I am also obsessed with fantasy sports and play...Expand for more
year around. I guess one the biggest surprises in my was not being able to find a doctor to provide solutions for my shoulder and elbow problems after I graduated. In the early 70's, there was no effective remedies for torn rotator cuffs. So although in my heart I felt like I could play pro ball, the dream died. I did have the surgery in 1996 and do play in Adult baseball leagues and softball. Because of my knees, I just pitch. Both Starting and relief and YES, I can still deal. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the kitchen and add on a a second smaller family room and a small office. My dream home would be a cabin in the mountains. What I have learned from my boys that despite how much you love them and try to teach and demonstrate right from wrong, they are going to make mistakes that can kill them, ruin their life, or teach them a lesson. Irregardless, I blame myself. the lesson for me in Adam's death is that " you have to protect them from themselves and be proactive in all situations. I have two teachers that I would love to see again and they are Mr.McPeak and Bud Raikes. Those two made a huge difference in my life. If I won $100 million, I'd give 20% of it to my church, then spend the rest on family, a few friends and a cabin in the mountains and a Harley. I guess to be truly happy I would be living in the mountains of North Carolina or East Tennessee with Shania Twain and/or Faith Hill raising 20 kids but if that happiness in unobtainable, and I am starting to believe it is, my wife will suffice. My current age is 57. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be rotting or dead. I was so completely half-right. Nothing come's easy. I have really enjoyed teacher but career wise, I would have really liked to be in pro ball in some capacity. My best friend would tell you I'm honest and direct, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as a flirt. I live in blue jeans, pull over shirts with a collar and T-shirts. The weirdest job I have ever had was at Kraft Cheese in Gallatin. I use to love but have not touched it since I left. I share my home with wife and two surviving boys, which I find stressful and relaxing. In 2000, my high school soccer team reached the state final four but lost in the opening round 1-0 in a driving rainstorm that made the field very muddy thus negating our speed. I have trophies for 4 distridt titles, 2 regional titles, and 3 coach of the year in soccer and 1 in baseball. I recieved an award for being the only coach in Manatee County to lead two sports to the state playoffs in the same year. Also the last 5 years that I coached soccer we finished in the top 5 in the state. the highest rating we were able to reach was 2nd. If I got one do over in life, I would have been much more active in my boys lives and not coached. In 10 years, I hope to be retired. I'm going to get there by completing my 30 year obligation.. My oldest firend, Tony Beckelhaimer is deceased. What made us click was music. What would surprise me at a high school reunion would be that none of us has aged or gained weight. My first job was at P&B Market, where I got paid 1.20 an hour to be a do boy. What I remember most about it is the first paycheck. My most vivid childhood memory was Leslie Spradling at prom. She was so beautiful.
