Daniel's Story

Life CHAPLAIN (CAPTAIN) DANIEL W. HARDIN Battalion Chaplain 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment Chaplain (Captain) Daniel W. Hardin was born in Dayton, Ohio on 30 April 1969. He earned the Bachelor of Science, Computer Information Systems degree from DeVry University, Columbus, Ohio in 1997 and the Master of Divinity degree from Ashland Theological Seminary in Ohio in 2001. He was ordained with the Ohio District Council of the Assemblies of God in 2001. While preparing for military ministry, he served civilian churches in Columbus and Baltimore, Ohio. Chaplain Hardin entered active duty after completing the Armored Crewman’s Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1987. He served as an armored crewman on M60A1 and M1 tanks with the Fifth Infantry Division (Mechanized), at Fort Polk, Louisiana. In 1991, he left active duty to pursue civilian education for military ministry and entered the Ohio Army National Guard where he served as a chaplain assistant. While in the Ohio Army National Guard, Chaplain Hardin served as the Unit Ministry Team NCO for the follow units: 73d Infantry Brigade (Separate), 73d Troop Command, 112th Medical Brigade, and finally with the Headquarters, State Area Command, Ohio Army National where he served as the State UMT NCO and obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class. rdin was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Chaplain Candidate. He was then assigned to the 1st Battalion, 137th Air Assault Helicopter Battalion. In August 2001, Chaplain Hardin completed the Chaplain Officer Basic Course and was commissioned as a chaplain in April 2002. He served as the Battalion Chaplain of the 1-137th Air Assault Helicopter Battalion for another year. In May 2003, Chaplain Hardin re-entered active duty. Since that time, he has been the Battalion Chaplain of the 1st Battalion, 81st Armored Regiment and the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment. His additional military education includes: Basic Airborne Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers Course, and the Chaplain Assistant Reclassification Course. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (w/one oak-leaf cluster), the Army Commendation Medal (w/three oak-leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (w/four oak-leaf clusters), and the Good Conduct Medal, the Reserve Component Achievement Medal (w/two oak-leaf clusters), the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (w/bronze hourglass device), and the Basic Parachutist Badge. Chaplain Hardin is married to the former Ann Herbert of Centerville, Ohio. They have four children: Matthew, Elizabeth, Joshua, and Katherine.
