Daniel's Story
Military
When I last looked at my current situation things could not get much worse, earlyer this morning around 2am we were ramping up for the termination of alfa camp 2 it was a holding area for a militant group of insurgent TANGO's in Afganastan along the west slope of the gurtchagos mountain range on the northeastern boarder. Mohare Tsugatinian, a rediculesly bad bad Turk and the principal behind this group was our main target. At 3:14 we got the red light to jump, the rear ramp opened and 9 of us exited the aircraft. We were at 27,000 feet, and performing what is called a HALO jump that is high altitude low opening. Hard enough to do during the day. At night with no moon, star light is not going to help much, we all were carrying around 90lbs of death dealing gear. All I could go by was my wrist altemeter. As the ground came up fast I poped my chute...Expand for more
at about 800 feet, at 600 feet I was begining to slow my descent, at 300 feet I realized I was headding for a rock wall that jumped up in front of me, pulling as hard and fast as I could on my right side risers the chute steered a hard right partialy colapsing I dropped faster than I wanted to but it was the only way to not be smashed like a bug on the windsheald of this mountain range. I am 47 years old at this time, much to old to be acting like this. Humans don't bounce well, and older humans are worse at bouncing so when I hit the ground doing a verticle 30 mph tucking and rolling to absorb the impact I could hear my joints and tendons screaming what an idiot I was for not retiring 15 years ago. I am not sure how long it took for my head to clear. I could hear trafic on my earphone, my first in charge was taking the roll, all accounted for! great!
