Daniel's Story
"Harrison Days"
I remember all the crazy times at Harrison. The "Weed Heads", the "Gangbangers", the "Nerds", what a mix of cultures. I think I dabbled in all groups. I wasn't very outgoing, and I only had a handful of friends, but I did all right for myself. Didn't have any serious girlfriends in H.S. I let opportunities slip by, maybe because of my shyness.
There was one I dated for a bit, she was hot, and I think she made the first move. I remeber walking her home down around California & Roosevelt, and getting my ass handed to my by a rival gang, them were the days. Live and learn, I say "If you're going to walk your girl home, make sure no gang affiliation is written on your back pack".
I also remember all them crazy lunch time food fights, we would experience every now and then. I remember people walking out of the lunch room with mashed patatoes in their ears, or covered with chocolate milk. The food wasn't bad, the bad part came when getting hit with a tray or chair, that's when it wasn't funny any more.
Many don't know this, but I had a brother who was 1 year ahead of me at H.H., his name was John Lucio. We were like night and day, and hung around in totally different circles. My friends were more gangbangers/weed heads, while he was in the drama class. Need I say more. Unfortunately he passed on in 2002, way to young, only 39.
I never quite made to graduation with my class in 83. I screwed up in my senior year, after I spent sophomore, and junior years making up credits I blew my freshmen year. Can you believe I only racked up 1.5 credits my 1st year. I did good for 2nd & 3rd year, taking 2 gyms, and ...Expand for more
double math classes. I was looking good and getting ready for senior year, but working at McDonalds and gangbanging got the best of me, and I blew it.
I had a run it with a short Hispanic teacher who was monitoring the lunch room doors, don't remember his name. Anyway we had a little altercation, and I ended up getting a free ride to Damen & 23rd station. That was the end of my days at Harrison. It was fun while it lasted, and I did learn something, ask Mr Walski. I loved history, and I believe I aced his class.
I tried getting my diploma through another school, for misfits, over by Washburne on Kedzie, and 31st, but I blew that too. I guess working at McD's on Cermak & Western, tired me out, so I couldn't focus on school like I should have.
Left school altogether, and worked at McD's for a few years, then got a job at AM-PM/Amoco on Cermak & Damen where I became manager for 7 years. I remember Ms. Carr the English teacher came by, and was disappointed in me, because she had higher hopes for me. I starting thinking maybe I should get back to school. I also noticed people that I had hired were getting their diploma, and taking college courses and landing better jobs than me.
So I decided to get my GED, and enrolled in college courses at Robert Morris and got my Bachelors degree and landed a high paying job with and Architectural firm.
I became a father and got married in 85. The marriage lasted for 8 years, not to bad, made it over that 7 year itch. I have somehow managed not to share my name with anyone else. I guess I've yet to find the special one who can tolarate my crazy ways.
Peace & Love,
Daniel Lucio
