Daniel's Story
Life
Married April 1982; retired June 1990 (at age 37). Four children, now 21, 19, 16, and 13. Most of my time is spent playing, traveling, handling family investments, and overseeing personal charitable funds. The funds emphasize grants to educational institutions and social service agencies. Grant requests are accepted on a rolling basis. Grants tend to be small, ranging from $100 to $25,000, though multi-year grants can range up to $100,000 or more. I also buy and sell used and rare books, specializing in modern first editions. I usually travel 3-4 months per year. School
I hated high school and hated almost all of the people in high school. My classmates (that's probably you) were, with just a few exceptions, cruel, obnoxious, and stupid. If this describes you, hopefully, you have improved in the past 35 years.....Expand for more
.some of you, anyway. The only worthwhile teacher at Freehold High School was Mr. Smith. Luckily, since leaving high school, my life has been about as perfect as it could be; if you can dream it, I probably did it. When I think back on high school and the rest of my life, I am reminded of the line in the song that goes "you've got to go through hell before you get to heaven." High school was hell, but the rest has been heaven. Looking back at my experience, I can understand why students shoot up their high schools. Would I do it again? Hell, no!
Workplace
I spent ten years in corporate finance, from 1980 to 1990. It was enough. Even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat. Like a poker player who knows when to quit, I took my winnings, left the game, and never looked back. These days, I spend most of the time with my kids, travel, do some volunteer work, serve on the Boards of several charities (including the Board of Trustees of the college I graduated from), do a bit of financial work on occasion, and generally have a pretty ideal life.
