Danny's Story

Once upon a time in a city far, far away.......I was born!!! YEAH!!!! And there was much rejoicing!!!! When things settled down, in St Louis, life went on, and on, and on, and on.... And then....1967....I entered first grade at St. Catherine of Alexandria Grade School. And for the next eight years I was the perfect student and the perfect son!!! (OK! OK! not really...but I did make it through and graduated from 8th grade in 1975) And once again, there was much rejoicing!!!!! After the summer was over, I started my 4 years of high school at the Jesuit run St Louis University High School (SLUH). It was here that I met many of my friends I still have to this day. *At this time I would like to give a shout out to one of my good friends, Joe Finn, who owns the fine eating and drinking establishment, "Pat's Bar and Grill" located near Forest Park in St Louis. Should you ever find yourself passing through St Louis, please stop in for a cold one or two and tell him Danny sent you.* Upon graduation from SLUH in 1979, I found myself lacking any direction in life, so I decided to attend St Louis University, and started college in September of 1979. Having no direction, however, I quickly discovered the University would not allow you to continue attending classes with a GPA of less than 1.5, and three semesters later, I was removed from the student roster. I was at this time, however, quite proficient in frisbee, foosball, softball, pool, darts, and beer bongs... It was now January of 1981, and I was still determined to complete my college degree in whatever, so I enrolled at Florissant Valley Community College. I discovered they did not care what your GPA was as long as you paid your tuition. Which by the way, was quite less than the tuition at SLU. This was perfect for me since I was still living at home and had just received a huge $.50 per hour raise at the Taco Bell where I worked. The summer of 1981, I realized I could not afford to go to school during the week, party at night and on weekends with my friends, while working at Taco Bell 40 hrs. a week for slightly more than minimum wage. So I decided a change had to be made! I quit my job at Taco Bell and became a bagger at a National grocery store. The pay was higher and now I was a union member in the United Food and Commercial Worker's Union. My pay was increased and by living at home with my parents, I was still able to go to school part-time and continue partying with my friends at night and on the weekends! I continued on this road from the summer of 1981 thru November of 1985. However, 6 months after starting my job at the grocery store, I was promoted to the produce department, and my pay increased every year as well. I turned 24 in September of 1985 an...Expand for more
d told my parents I would be moving out of the house soon.....There was much rejoicing!!! It was then that I told them I had joined the Air Force and would be leaving Nov. 18th for basic training. My brother Don, who is one year older than me, had joined back in 1980. I started my military career one week before Thanksgiving. I was at Lackland AFB, TX. until Jan. of 1986, and then went to Sheppard AFB, TX. from Jan. to Feb. 1986. I arrived in Altus AFB, OK. March 1, and left for Fairchild AFB, WA. on April 30th. After one month at survival school, I finally arrived at what would become my home for the next 15 years, Travis AFB in Fairfield, Ca., on June 5th, 1986. I was a C-5 Loadmaster assigned to the 75th Military Airlift Squadron, which later became the 21st Airlift Squadron. From June 1986 until March 2001, I travelled all over the world, made many life-long friends, and met many wonderful and fun people. I also continued to excel in foosball, softball, pool, darts, cards, and beer drinking games. I married my first wife (yes there are more) in March of 1989 and we had two beautiful daughter's, Kirsten who is now 18, and Lysette who is now 17. We seperated in March of 1992 and the divorce was final in April of 1993, and there was much rejoicing!!!! I married my second wife (yes there still is one more) in April of 1993 and we had two son's, Alex who is soon to be 13, and Nicholas who is 8. I left Travis AFB, CA in March of 2001 and was reassigned to the 56th Airlift Squadron at Altus AFB, OK. My wife and I bought a house in Denton TX, which was about 200 miles from Altus, because it was closer to her parents and grandparents. I had a house on base, and I commuted every weekend to Denton to be with the wife and kids. We seperated in Feb. of 2004 and the divorce was final in July of 2004, and there was much rejoicing!!! I had a lot of free time during the week after I moved to Altus and so I started taking night courses at the education center on base. I graduated with a BS in Occupational Education in May of 2005. I finished out my military career on Dec 1, 2005. And there was much rejoicing!!!!! In October of 2005, I started working for Boeing as a C-17 Loadmaster Instructor and continue to do so today. I still drive down to Denton, Tx. every other weekend to pick up my boys for visitation. My oldest daughter still lives in Ca. with her mom, and her sister lives with me here in Altus. In the spring of 2006 I made contact via email with someone I had met while in the Air Force. She has since moved down here to Altus from Grand Forks, ND., and we were married on 12-12-2007. I am very happy with the way my life has turned out and where I am now. PS. I am still very proficient at all bar sports.
