Danny's Story

High School activities I participated in were: Chorus and Madrigal; Willarko and Tiger Tales staff (Note: check out the staff photo on page 122 of the 1966 Willarko. Look at the bottom of the picture and notice what Gerry Baker, Andy Farmer, Joe Hill, and Kenny Haney are standing on for elevation); FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America); FTA (Future Teachers of America); NHS (National Honor Society)...and some basketball. Awards and achievements were: Mr. FBLA 1966 (Ellen Miller was Miss FBLA); member of the first golf team (1966) because Steve Bowers and I didn't want to run track; scored 129 points as a freshman on the varsity basketball team in '63-'64 which is a record that stands today; inducted into the WHS Activities Hall of Fame (2/19/95); Sophomore Pilgrimage to Jefferson City; Boys State with Joe Bob McLin summer of 1966; was the escort for the queen (Naomi Sanders ) of the first WHS junior/senior prom; currently I am second on the individual career points in basketball with 1,506 (Scott Welsh, '92, is first). Two favorite high school memories: 1) The fall of 1966 and picking up our desks and moving from the old high school to the new high school...which is now the old high school or more specifically, the new junior high school. Are we confused yet? 2) Susan Johnston. After graduating from SMS in 1971 (the U wasn't even attached yet), I moved to northern Jefferson County. I taught in the Fox C-6 District (Fox High School, Arnold, MO, 25 years); Steelville School District (Steelville High School, 5 years); and Villa Duchesne Catholic Girls School (4 years) in St. Louis West County. Courses taught were: biology, zoology, anatomy & physiology, and chemistry. It was fun teaching the sciences because we had all the cool toys. In June, 2005, after 34 years, I retired from education. In March, 2007 I returned to Willard, MO (back to my roots) where I had a small house built on the 20-acre property along Hwy. O owned by my family since 1960. I moved into it May 21, 2009. als games and especially the seats in the Redbird Roost. I love that "all you can eat" thing; on the other hand, there isn't a bad seat in the whole stadium. I am a member of the Elks Lodge #409 and try to do the dinner & dance most Friday nights. I try to attend the Willard High School sporting and cultural events. The new high school is really a beautiful facility. I am a member of the WHS Alumni Committee which hosts the annual Alumni Banquet. I still enjoy arrow head collecting (but local farmers seldom plow anymore); digital photography (but my camera is smarter than I am); hiking/walking (but the hills have gotten steeper); spelunking (but the caves have gotten smaller); and country/western dancing. It is still true that "the girls all start looking prettier at closing time." Unfortunately I'm so old now that I very seldom make it to last call. You can catch me at Willard High School events, Springfield Elks Club, Springfield Cardinals games, SMSU events (I refuse to say Missouri State University), or I'm outside working. 20 acres keeps me occupied. Just stop by. I'm the 600 feet long white fence 1/2-mile west of the Sac River Bridge on Hwy. O. Oops! You waited too long. 8/21/10 I married Janice Ketterman Harris ('69 WHS graduate and widow of Jack Harris, also from '69). I knew there was a reason I went to class reunions. Jack and Janice were married 39 years and had a great life together but took few vacations. Janice wanted to travel, and we do! From 11/2009 to 7/2017 we took 54 big and small vacations. We discontinued travel in 2018 to oversee construction (in my case to write checks) for our new house on the northwest corner of the 20-acre tract outside Willard along Hwy. O that has been in the Gilmore family since 1960. We began traveling again in 2019 with trips to Nebraska (Sandhill Cranes) and South Carolina (Gems of the South). The C-19 Virus came & went, but we are pretty much have stayed camped in working the 20 acres. Oh, yeah, I turned 76 July 2, 2025. You probably heard that anguished cry!
