Danny's Story

My life after LP has been a remarkable journey for me. After some years in corporate sales, I became a veterinarian technician. I found a calling as a dog obedience/animal behaviorist. During that time I learned about dog sledding from the Tlingkit/Haida natives of British Columbia. So I included 18 years of racing a kennel of 40 sled dogs in Montana, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Nevada. In between that time, I met my life partner of 29 years now. Andrew was presented to me in a dream I had in my Junior year, the picture of the person I would spend my life with. Strange because I was in a relationship with Cuca and we had a son and daughter together during our 7 years. Andrew entered my life one day, 14 years later I saw him and the dream I had was exactly as he appeared in it, tall, blond, blue eyed, and in a mountain setting and together we shared the adventures of dog sledding, racing our winning teams around the country. Then the drought came the snows went and so did the races. We both returned to college, Andrew to get his AS degree in Registered Nursing and I my AS degree in Medical Laboratory Technician . Andrew & I bought a lush green and forested 100 acre ranch. We then embarked on successfully raising Arabian horses, breeding, training, selling, showing and competing in Hunter, Jumpers, Show Hack, Dressage, Endurance racing 50 miles and now vaulting ( gymnastics on the back of a moving horse at the trot or canter). Stallions, mares, fillys, colts and geldings. We have recently entered the European market, with sales to Germany. At age 55 I took early retirement to focus on our Arabian Horse business and the honey business that I started in my Freshman year, I expanded that over the past 55 years, working with the African Bee (so called killer bees) as better higher yield producing honey bees. Yes, it comes with liabilities for sure. I had also found a creative skill from my Apache heritage for making beautiful southwestern style silver and turquoise jewelry which PBS once did a feature on me. I had been producing silver art work for 25 years and working in the lab was taking up to much of my time. So at age 55 I retired, we bought a large working cattle ranch and increased our herd of horses. We compete across the country, from Californian to Texas, northward to Wyoming, Nebraska Colorado, Utah and Oklahoma with our horses. Andrew & I show every weekend somewhere in some state with a few weekends off in December. We show in Hunter Pleasure, Hunter Hack, Show Hack, Jumpers, Country English, Dressage and Competitive Trail. For 2 years in a row now, we've captured the Regional Championships, That involves 8 states competing. AZ., NM, CO, NV, UT, TX, WY, NB. *.UPDATE * - 5 / 27 / 2014 - I have won it again, that makes it the 4th year in a row. My Andrew captured the Reserve Championship. We continue to be the top contenders at all our competitive shows, our forte is best in the equine art of Dressage. The graceful equine movement of gaits & transitions with near invisible cues to the horse. **** Update: In 2016 My 2 stallions took the National Championship and Reserve National Championship in Dressage. that win. I developed a training method akin to a 'horse whisperer', moving horses with a nod, a finger a thought. Riding in demonstrations showing a horse in various gaits and movements without any visible indication from me. Art on horseback. I am having the time of my life and it looks like it's going to be a long and wonderful journey. At 62 I have managed to keep fit with a 29 inch waist at 145 lbs. My current goal that I am striving for now, is to compete in the Olympics, with the U.S. Equestrian Team, in Dressage. Andrew thinks if I don't speed the process up some , at my age, it might have to be the Special Olympics! Last year there was a fellow from Japan, who competed in Dressage at age 73, so it's certainly doable. In April of 2013, I was given a small but exciting part in the movie, 'The Lone Ranger', with Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. I play a Comanche warrior, in the fire dance scene, singing and drumming a war song on one of the large drums. Scratch another off my bucket list. ( to be in a movie, just once in my life). ****Update 2016 & 2017: I enjoyed small parts in the movie, The Ridiculous 6 (wedding scene) and also in the T.V. Epic ch. series ; 'Graves' with Nick Nolte (Careless Giant segment), riding side by side with him on our horses. (reservation scene black and white pinto). My life with Andrew is as blessed and as good as it gets. I wish each and everyone of you the same beautiful life journey. Life is much to short to not make the most of every day. "Life is a banquet and most poor son's of b...chs are starving to death!" Quote from Mame. May 18, 2020 - Well this has been a very challenging year to say the least, including Andrew and I. With the Covid19, all horse shows across the nation were canceled. Including the Olympics in Japan. Postponed until next year, 2021. Not all athletes will be able to postpone. Some like me will be older, at my age, time is of the essence. Every year flies by faster than the speed of light. Our horses aren't immune neither, in fact life is much shorter for them. Competitive span is about 15 years. Many of our own competing athletes have come near to that. Another year some won't be able to compete anymore effectively. My life dream to make the Olympics has dimmed a bit with the postponement, but life is still worth living regardless. Sometimes, we don't get everything we want, but Andrew and I have had more life than most folks get in a couple lifetimes. We're grateful and we'll move graciously forward still, as we've had an Olympic grand life these past 34 years together. More yet to come, that be for sure!. I had plans on attending the 1970 Class Reunion, but the one all important major show of the year left, is the American/Canadian Nationals Championship horse show, the same week of the scheduled reunion. I've never made any of the Reunions, though I've wanted to but, always conflicting priorities. With several of our horses might be their last year and our clients too, this doesn't appear I'll make this one either. Dabnabit. If the show gets canceled due to the virus, I expect the reunion will likely too. You all take care and I hope to pleasantly meet up with any one of you some day! Danny
