Danny's Story

The first school I went to was Cummings Elementry. I lived on S. Parkway E. across the blvd. from the original Collettas. My old duplex is still there and Collettas is still there too,and still serves great food. Mrs Owens was my 1st grade teacher. She was a sweet lady. In Nov 1953 just before Thanksgiving we moved to 2475 Dwight rd. and I started 2nd grade at Charjean Elementry and went there through the 6th grade. My teachers were Mrs Waggle 2nd,Mrs Childs 3rd, Mrs Foy 4th, Mrs Brigman 5th, and Mrs Taylor 6th. Charjean was a great school, loved playing baseball, football and marbles at recess. Got caught throwing pinto beans in cafeteria at Barry Homes. He and I had to spent the rest of lunch recess in the dog pen. I'm still not very fond of pinto beans to this day. My favorite teachers there were Mrs Foy and Mrs Childs. I attended Fairview Jr. High for 7th,8th and 9th grade. I was in Mrs Johnston's spelling/penmanship 2nd story class when old Rustwood Park burned down. Can also remember hearing the sounds of the Mid-South fair in late Sept. and the smell of cotton candy and the other delicious food that was cooking there. And we always had a bee or two that would drift into class on it's way to the fair. I couldn't wait to get to the 8th grade because we could get a coke from the old coke machine that was in the middle of the cafeteria. One day I put a quarter into the machine and three V nickles poped into the changer. I still have those V nickles. My favorite teacher there was Mr. Grimes 8th grade math teacher. Went to Central High and had a great time there. I loved radio class and took radio for three years. Mr Branyan, who we affectionally called Mr. B, and Mrs Lanier my home room teacher, were very special to me. Had some very good friends at Central but my best buddies were Alfred Best, David Brown and Leo Rhodes. We rode to school together and we rode home from school together. If one of us had detention the others of us would wait so we could all go home together. Sometimes there were two of us in detention at the same time. Many a time we rode the 56 Lamar bus and got off at Thornton's Do-nut shop and we would get some bags of white powdered donuts (25 cents) eat some and the rest we would have a do-nut fight while we walked to transfer to the 32 East Parkway bus. The white pock marks made by those do-nuts were hard to get out of our R.O.T.C. uniforms. Except for Radio and ROTC my grades weren't the best and I found myself going to summer school a number of times, so I also have some fondness for Belview Jr. High, Messick and Tech. There were several girls who i liked but I was usually too shy to let them know it. I think some of them were shy too. Our neighborhood had some very pretty girls but the prettiest girls lived on Dwight rd.--Sharon, Carol, Ann, Phyllis, and on Charjean st.---- Diane,Barbara, Paula. Joined the army in Sept of 65. Basic training at Ft. Jackson,SC. Spent eight months at Ft Monmouth,NJ in 66 taking Ground Surveillance Radar Repair. Really enjoyed it there. Every friday we only had to go to school from 8 to 2 and then we were off until 6 am monday. The USO would bus in young ladies from Newark for a dance that they gave every friday night, then they would bus them back to Newark after the dance. Was with the 54th Infantry at Ft. Knox,KY and was assigned to a squad which took care of two Gnd. Surv. Radar sets. Spent a year...Expand for more
in Vietnam from May 67 to May of 68. Was assigned to the 41st Signal Bn. at Qui Nhon. Repaired telephone and switchboards. Got to travel some in country to repair or inspect equipment.Had a lot of support from relatives ,friends and neighbors back home. Central class of 68 sent me a Christmas package. Found out years later that my wife Vicky had helped her older brother, a Centralite, put those packages together. Discharged from Ft. Hood Sept. 68. Met Vicky Smith from Bethel Grove neighborhood when my dad and I were at the Krystal on Lamar. She was 17 and I was 20. Her Krystal uniform was about three sizes too big for her but her bright blue eyes really caught my attention and I started going to the Krystal several times a week. I ordered 3 krystals,a fry , chile and coke every time. I still like those little Krystal burgers but they don't taste quite as good as when Vicky made them. I finally asked Vicky out in Nov 68 and we married in April of 70. Had two beautiful children ,a girl Regenia and a boy Daniel. We also have a beautiful grandughter Lindsey age 9. Vicky and I have been married for 40 years. Spent eleven years with Memphis Airport Police Dept , seven of those years as a Sgt. When I first started working at the airport, there wern't any checkpoints or screenings like there are today. Family, friends, etc. could still go to gate to meet or see passengers off. Before I left in 82 there were checkpoints at all concourses and only passengers were allowed to go to the gate. Had many exciting times while working there and got to meet several celebrities including Elvis, George Wallace, Billy Graham, Danny Thomas,Buford Pusser etc . Worked in medical sales for 28 years selling orthopedic and otology products. Companies I was a rep for included Smith Medical-Dist for Richards Medical, AOA-EBI,General Orthopedics-Dist. for Biomet. Was a distributor for Treace Medical a small but innovative otology company that had it's office in Memphis, my territory was TX and OK. I usually had some great bosses that I worked for and for the most part I enjoyed being in sales. For the last ten years of my sales career,my territory was San Antonio and the surrounding area. With all the driving I had to do over the years I was really grateful for talk radio and Rush. My ambition had been to be a cowboy and a policeman. Well I was an airport cop and I did move to Texas. Favorite color is red. Have always loved red cars since i had a little red wagon. Enjoy hiking, chess, going to Schlitterbahn, playing Rook, horseback riding, traveling and going to civil war battlefields. Love Christmastime and Thanksgiving Our (Vicky & my) favorite song is Unchained Melody, other songs I really like are Let's Live for Today by the Grass Roots,Stormy Weather and Ding-a-Ling By(Centralites) Tommy Burk and the Counts,Hungry, Happy Together,Two Faces Have I,Walk Don't Run 64, Pipeline and a song I really would love to hear at football games again "Dixie". Vicky and I like to dance to Rock and Roll, and Country and Western two-step. My favorite movie is Gone With The Wind, others are Song Of The South, It's A Wonderful Life, the old 50s War Of The World movie, the old Godzilla movie,Star Wars and Jurassic Park. My most favorite tv program was The Amos n Andy Show, others include The Rifleman, Leave It to Beaver,I Love Lucy, Andy Griffin Show, Bonanza ,the Gray Ghost , Donna Reed Show and Father Knows Best etc.
