Darla's Story

DEC. 23, 2013 i WANT TO WISH ALL OF MY CLASSMATES FROM THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1960 A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY 2014. I am currently living in the small town of Ennis, Texas (population 19,000). Ennis is 35 miles south of Dallas. I love the simplicity of living in a small town but being close enough to Dallas and Ft. Worth for shopping and lots of sports and recreation events. The story of how I ended up in Ennis is a long one so I'll leave that for next time. I've seen a lot of high school mascot names through the years but never any other Cavemen. Our school was unique. Can anyone who is still living in Carlsbad tell me if the mascot is STILL Cavemen? More later. i have deleted my really OLD history from my STORY and left some of the more "recent" history. I hope to add something MORE RECENT soon - after the holidays and beginning of 2014. Later, I took the Civil Service exam and was offered a secretarial job in Dallas. I worked first for the U.S. Agriculture Dept., then later for the U.S. Attornys' office. I met husband #3 in Dallas at a square dance club for Singles. Let me tell you, square dancing is lots of fun and great exercise! One day, a coworker mentioned wanting to sell his property in Ennis. We bought the property and a new mobile home and that's how I ended up in Ennis. Ennis is a small town, currently about 19,000 population. It is 35 miles south of Dallas. It was settled by Czechs originally. It took a long time for me to learn how to pronounce the names:) I began to do Temp work after moving to Ennis, sometimes in Dallas and sometimes in Ennis. Husband #3 developed COPD due to many years of smoking. We had 23 years of happiness together before he passed away, following bypass surgery. I continued to live in the country for a year before buyin...Expand for more
g a house in town. I love living in a small town. Everything is "close by." Eventually, I plan to move closer to my daughter, who lives a few miles north west of Ft. Worth. I will also be closer to my son, who lives in Frisco, north of Dallas. Well, I think I have written a "novel" here - so I will wrap this up. Let me add a humorous note here. As my third husband used to say, "If I had known I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself." November 2, 2013 - New Entry: Approx. one month ago, my mother, who was living in a nursing home passed away at the age of 93. For the past 2 years, my primary role had been caregiver and morale support for my Mother. My first thought after she died was, "What is my purpose now." Another thought was, "She doesn't need me anymore" which gave me an empty, useless feeling. But I was fortunate to have her for so long. Almost everyone else I know who is my age lost their mothers many years ago. I have no other family members in Ennis but many supportive friends from church. I attend a large Baptist church, where there are many activities to participate in which keep me very busy. My son will soon be 53; my daughter turns 50 in just a few days. I have 5 grandchildren from age 31 down to age 14, and I have a great-granddaughter who is 8. Funny how the kids grow up and get bigger or more mature, but except for some stiff muscles & joints and trouble hearing, seeing, and remembering, we don't feel much different. Mentally, we are the same person we've always been. Does anyone else feel like "deep inside ourselves" we haven't really changed? Well, I'm getting into too "deep" here. To repeat myself, I will add something more current to my "story" after the first of the year. Wow, 2014, Can you believe it? Later, Darla.
