Darlene's Story
Life
In 2001, my husband and I moved to Port Orange, Florida. We both took early retirement. I had left NYS working for the Dept. of Labor. Retired no longer, I now work for the Volusia County library system. I have been employed there for almost 5 years. Our daughter still resides in NY, near Utica. We recently purchased an rv and travelled up north to visit last summer. Although Florida is beautiful with so much tropical flavor, adjusting has been somewhat of a culture shock. There seems to be many more rude people here than in NY, but there are some really nice people too. Road rage is all to prevalent. We live not far from Orlando, but don't visit all that often. . We sold it to purchase our motorhome. I miss going out on the Intracoastal- seeing manatees, dolphins, and seaturtles, and catching sting rays, cat fish and puffer fish to name just a few. Florida is a nature lover's paradise and we are that! I recently purchased a motor scooter and am learning to ride this new mode of transportation. Daytona Beach, our neighbor, is a land of motorcycles, stock cars and spring breakers. We all learn to keep our distance when any of these events comes to town. We don't miss the snow, the cold or the dreary of Binghamton. I did not want to move to Florida, but now it would be difficult to drag me away. And the neat thing is that our aches and pains are less here due to the warm humidity. More later...
