Darlene's Story

Life Hello fellow classmates! Hope the years have been kind to you all and you are blessed with health and happiness. My parents divorced in the early 70’s and we moved to Cheektowaga where I finished High School. What a huge culture shock from country to city living. I always thought about all the friends I grew up with and missed at Iroquois. Wish I had a 1974 Iroquois yearbook to look thru! The years have flown by for me. I tried college for a year then joined the Army, (bet you never saw me doing that) and became a Hospital Diet Therapist. I married a career military man and had 2 children. We were in Germany twice and the culture there is awesome, not to mention the food! The bonding between military families was one of the most unforgettable experiences, meeting people from everywhere and sharing life stories was one of the best things I could ever have given my children and myself! We became a retired military family about a year after my husband returned from the Gulf War and after living in government quarters for many years, bought our home in Denver, Colorado where my husband's family is. I have been in Federal Civil Service for 27 years now, taking a variety of jobs as we traveled here and abroad. It's hard to have a "career" when you travel every three years or so. l as other positions, and have done many things from supervisor in a snack shop for soldiers in Germany, to a Quality Assurance Technician for a hospital, to Secretary for the Chief of Medicine and a Deputy Commander in a military hospital, to Administrative Assistant and then Office Manager for a medical clinic. It was interesting, educational and challenging to stay versatile and flexible enough to be able to follow my husband for his military tours and still stay gainfully employed. (Too many neat souvenirs to buy on travels) As much as I would have liked to have been an "Ozzie and Harriet" stay home mom, I think I would have been bored silly. I now work for the Veteran's Administration as a patient services assistant helping to care for our vets, of which I am one! I most likely will stay until retirement unless some fabulously fascinating position comes along that I am unable to resist! I was recently back in Cheektowaga. My family is still there. My husband's current occupation may find us transferred in the near future. I would like to be closer to home after having been away for so many years. So, how about you? Where has life taken you beyond the walls of Iroquois AND Cheektowaga Central? Would look forward to hearing from you if you remember me! May God Bless you and yours. Fondly, Darlene Wagner Bailey
