Darlene's Story
Darlene is from Elma, New York. Darlene's schools included Iroquois Central School District, Elma, NY and Cheektowaga Junior-Senior High School, Gr 10-12. I Attended D'Youville College for a year after HS Graduation, then entered the Army and served as Hospital Diet Therapy Tech. Got married in San Antonio, Texas and I followed my career Military Spouse overseas to Germany a couple of time as well as duty stations in the US. Germany was amazing and the food was awesome. I was so happy to be able to see where my ancestors came from. We traveled mostly around Germany while there and took up Volksmarching (hiking) the Germany countryside. We did get to East Germany and Austria and sat in the Olympic Rings at Innsbruck! My daughter has a piece of the wall separating West and East Germany from her grade school field trip while we were there. The wall came down right after our last tour there. I took a variety of jobs over the years to stay employed as we traveled duty stations. I worked in my military occupation, as well as medical transcription, Medical QI Tech, Secretary to Chief of Medicine, and Provost Marshal, Clinic Manager at VA for both Gastroenterology and Primary Care Firm Team. Retired early due to health issues. Now I am a scrapbooking maniac trying to preserve and organize memories for my children and grandchildren! Between us we have 5 children and a huge group of grandkids and 11 great grands with one on the way!! We travel occasionally, mostly back to Buffalo to see my family but after hubby retired from the Army he worked for 22 years as a Manager at the US Postal Bulk Mail Center in Denver. Although he is retired from there as well, he is still the President of the National Alliance of Postal Supervisors for Denver, so we travel for his conventions and various meetings. We are both members of our local Loyal Order of Moose Lodge so we stay busy doing activities with them as well. Still on our bucket list are trips to Alaska and Hawaii and back to Europe, and this time we have to fit in Paris as well as some other European countries! Still have not cruised so that is on the list as well!!
My current passion is Feline Rescue, I have trapped and helped over 25 cats in the last 3 years, I make sure they get their shots and spay or neuter, then they are assessed to see if they can be socialized at our local Dumb Friends League (like an SPCA) and if so, they get adopted! Of the very few that are returned to me as too feral, I have heated shelters in my yard and heated food shelters and water bowls and I continue to care for them. Some of them have been able to find homes after they have calmed a bit post neuter. Sadly, some were cancer ridden and had to be put down so they did not suffer alone. I hope if you see a need in your own communities that you will help these poor animals, either by donations to shelters or caring for them yourself. Hope the years have been kind to you all.
