Darrel's Story
Life
After graduating, I went to college in Stevens Point and majored in Natural Resouce Management, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971.
On March 1, 1972, I joined the Stevens Point Police Department and worked there until December 29, 1974. At that time, I started as a deputy sheriff for the Portage County Sheriff's Department. While working in law enforcement, I attended more than 22 specialized training schools including firearms instructor and hostage negotiator schools. I retired from the sheriff's department on September 16, 1992, due to a job injury I received at an accident scene.
In August of 1975, I was married to Peggy Baake in Stevens Point, WI. We had three children, two girls and a boy. All are grown now and two still live in Stevens Point, the oldest lives in Conway, AR. She is married and has two sons, Darrel and Samuel.
Peggy and I love travelling and go at least twice a year to Arkansas to see our daughter's family and especially the grandkids. We do a lot of fishing (my wife likes it more than I do), and I enjoy walking and taking pictures of wildlife.

Fall, I do some hunting and did enjoy going deer hunting about a hundred miles or so north of Stevens Point on my older brother's property.
I enjoy woodworking and make a lot of different types of lawn ornaments and 'knick knack' items for the home, especially for older people. I also make toys for children.
Since I retired from the sheriff's department, I have been keeping busy by installing new electrical services as well as updating existing services to homes in the Stevens Point and Wausau area. However, the electrician I worked with has now retired, so I guess I've retired again.
I have a lot of nephews and nieces, as well as great and great great nephews and nieces to keep me busy visiting in and around the Milwaukee area as well as other parts of the State.
As of this writing, of my siblings (two brothers and four sisters), I have a twin brother and two sisters left. My older sister lives in San Diego, CA, is a retired CPA and now a writer, and my other sister lives in Milwaukee and works for a trucking firm as an office supervisor. My twin lives in Hustisford, WI and is a master carpenter.
