Darrell's Story
Life
We currently live in Northern California 30 miles south of San Francisco in Los Altos. However, we hope to move to Dana Point next year.
I was happily married to Tere for 21 years. I married her right after I left the Air Force. We lived in Silicon Valley and finally settled in Los Altos.
We enjoyed going on cruises and driving our right-hand drive 1950 MG-TD on trips. We drove the MG-TD to Alaska as far north as the Arctic Circle. Two years later we drove it in England and Scotland for 3 weeks. Fun car.
After 21 years of marriage, Tere lost her battle with breast cancer due to the flu.
Tere's cousin and my current wife's cousin are best friends. They decided Marilyn and I should meet, which we finally did July 4, 2000. There were so many fireworks between us, there was no need for others to celebrate the 4th. We've been married for 5 years.
With this marriage I finally got "kids" -- a daughter and son in their 20's (no teenagers for me!). Marilyn and I now have a son-in-law and two wonderful granddaughters.
We have an old Golden Retriever named Meg and a relatively young Bernese Mountain Dog named Buddy.
I guess living in Silicon Valley is the first tip, but I am heavily involved in technology. I've become a recent convert to the religion of Apple. Fun stuff.
We are often in Southern California since we are Disney fanatics. I figure, if I have to be in a cult, Disney is the best cult to join. Also it is a fun -- though expensive -- addiction.
We often visit Disneyland (up to 10 times per year) and Walt Dis...Expand for more
ney World (up to 3 times a year). When I retire, we plan to do a round-the-Walt Disney-world tour visiting all the Disney Parks.
College
I have an AA from American River College in Sacramento and a BS in Information Systems Management from the University of San Francisco. Other than this, I don't want to revisit any of my college days or nights.
Workplace
I currently work at Network Appliance. I am the NetApp global Business Resilience Program Manager.
After I left the Air Force, I joined HP as a computer repair technician. I then became a programmer analyst, programming manager, and technical services manager. Along the way I became versed in disaster recovery (DR) planning. After DR followed me on every job, I decided to get into business continuity/disaster recovery planning full time. I was an internal and external consultant for HP.
After 26 years, I left HP and started consulting on my own. Though I was relatively successful, I missed working with a team. Mistakenly I joined Deloitte but left as soon as I could and joined NetApp.
Military
In '69 I was a draft dodger. To dodge the draft, I joined the Air Force 2 days before I was about to be drafted. I was in the Air Force for 6 1/2 years. After boot camp and 9 months of training in Chanute AFB, Rantoul, IL, I settled into Mather AFB in Rancho Cordoba, CA.
I was a simulator repair technician specializing in navigation simulators.
The highlight of my years in the Air Force was learning to fly small planes and ride a motorcycle (which was stolen before I killed myself).
