Darrell's Story
Went to CSULA . Started working at Union Oil Company in the mail room. Later promoted to Computer operator. Was drafted in 1966 into the Army and upon completion of basic training was transferred to Texas for Leadership School. After graduating, was trained as a medic. Upon completion, was transferred to x-ray school. after completion, was transferred to 86th Evacuation Hospital where I finished my active service obligation. Returned to Union oil and worked in the computer room for two years and then found a better job at Pensick And Gordon, a toy wholesaler. Was promoted from accounts payable to Staff Accountant. Decided this was not the job for me, went back to CSULA and got my Bachelors. I found a job in Baxter International and worked in a laboratory with the development and manufacture of injectable serums from blood plasma derivatives. Worked with wood, got my contractor's license and owned and operated a small cabinet business. I Met my wife in 1980 and was married in 1982. My wife is from the Philippines. ology. She now works in the biotech field. I decided not to work until 65, so retired at 53 years old. It seems that I am always busy doing something. I sometimes wonder when did I have the time to go to work? We have done a lot of world traveling (wife's idea). As we get older, we are not as agile and I have slowed down. The "Lazy Boy", reading, doing puzzles to keep my mind active and "tinkering" in the garage take up most of my time. I have a retired "fair weather fishing buddy" and we go to Balboa Pier. Don't catch any big fish or even edible (mackerel), but it is relaxing and the anticipation of the fish nibbling on the bait and reeling it in is refreshing. This last summer, went to San Diego and took a full day fishing boat. Caught 5 tuna (not as big as seen on TV, but 16 -24 inchers. The family loved it, but to me fish is fish. They all taste the same. Am planning for my 37th year wedding anniversary. Time sure goes by swiftly. For those at the 55th, had a good time and enjoyed the "chit chat" and remembrances. Still feel good and can get around by foot. Father time has been good to me. I am still waiting for grandchildren. I have not had many contacts with other students of 1962, but of course I was not the most open and friendly person. So to those of you who read this, a BIG HELLO!!!!
