Darren's Story

I graduated from Coronado early in January of '88 and went to Marine Corps boot camp. During my time in the Marines I worked on communication and navigation electronic systems for fighter jets and helicopters. I lived in Okinawa, Japan for two years before being stationed in southern California for the majority of my time in the Corps. After I got out of the Marines I moved to Virginia to try and get a job working in politics; I had finished my bachelor's degree in political science before I got out of the military. I ended up teaching math and electronics at a local junior college, kind of like DeVry. After a year I realized I loved to teach, but the I could not live on the pay. The school I taught at had a job placement office, so I asked one of my friends in the office to see what was available for our graduates. I applied for a job installing security systems at U.S. embassies around the world. My first post was Kiev, Ukraine, where I stayed for about four months. I really enjoyed eastern Europe, the food was excellent and the culture was unique. I learned enough Russian to get around town and most people were very patient and helpful when I tried to speak Russian...and they laughed a lot. My next post was Warsaw, Poland, which lasted another four months. That city was very interesting because the city was leveled as a result of carpet bombing in WWII, so no structure in the city is older than 1945. They rebuilt the "old city" in the same style as the original building so it still looks old. I was fascinated by the military museum in Warsaw because they have military history going back to the middle ages and longer; as compared to the U.S., which only has military history back to perhaps King Phillip's War in 1675. Additionally, before I went to Poland I visited the Holocaust museum here in Washington, D.C. and saw displays about many of the locations I went to in Warsaw. My next few posts were inspection trips so I only stayed a week to ten days in each location, for example, my trip to Canada included 10 days in Quebec, Ottowa, Montreal and Toronto. Over the next two years, I also went to Yerevan, Armania; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Australia; Bangkok, Thailand; Aukland, New Zealand, Nairobi, Kenya; Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and Algiers, Algeria. After a few years on the road I was asked to work at the headquarters building as a project manager and security systems designer instead of installation tech. During that time I designed security systems for the State Department and would travel to different posts to ensure the designs were implemented properly. That job took me to Majuro, Marshall Islands; Helsinki, Finland; Stockholm, Sweden and some others. I went to ...Expand for more
the Office of Personnel Management for a while, but missed the travel so I came back to the State Department in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security. Now I inspect embassies around the world to ensure they meet the federal requirements for proper security. Since I came back I have continued to travel to interesting and fun locations, such as; Bangui, Central African Republic; Podgorica, Montenegro; Koror, Palau (where they filmed on of the Survior series); Kolonia, Micronesia; Seoul, Korea; and Hanoi, Vietnam, to name a few. I really enjoy my job and feel very fortunate to have the government pay me to visit so many neat places. On the personal front, I was married for seven years to my first wife. We married very young while I was in the Marine Corps and was sent to Japan for six months before our first anniversay. That pretty much ended the marriage, but we stayed together for six more years out of stubborness. I met my current wife in Virginia at the church I went to when I wasn't on the road. She is a great lady and very patient with my work schedule. Fortunately, she is very independent and has her own interests and life to lead while I am away on my trips. We have a great time together and I have been able to take her with me on my excursions to Berlin, Germany; Aukland, New Zealand; Stockholm, Sweden; and Milan, Italy (during which time we stopped by Rome on the way home). She has a son from her first marriage, named Jimmy, who is a great kid. So we make our home in Fredericksburg, Virginia, about 60 miles south of Washingtion, D.C. I play tuba in the church orchestra and attempt to play guitar in the privacy of my own home so as not to embarass myself in public. Since my time in the Marines I have studied a lot of Civil War history, so living here is like being a kid in a candy store. I visit different battlefields on the weekends and really enjoy getting to see places that I had read about for years before moving out here. My wife is a really good singer and recently put out her first CD. She also sings in a gospel group, which travels around Virgina, Maryland and Pennsylvania. I run their sound equipment for their shows when I am in town, which is fun, as well as allowing me to travel with the group. That is about it for now. I am hoping to get a job with the foreign service part of the State Department, which will allow me to stay at the embassies for several years instead of a couple of months. That opportunity is still a few years down the road, so I will stay where I am at for now and continue my travels, which for 2008 includes Maputo, Mozambique; N'djamena, Chad; Djibouti, Djibouti; and a trip to Fiji, which my wife has already claimed as her next trip to accompany me.
