Darrin's Story

Military I joined the Army in May of 1988. Don't know why, but I guess i was burned out on school and needed to take a break. I went to basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. It was pretty hot down there, but I was already in pretty good shape before i joined, so it wasn't so bad. All of the yelling and screaming was actually pretty funny. After basic training I went to training for my job at an Air Force base in Texas. That was fun, as well. I had never been to Texas before then, so it was nice to be somewhere new. The school was five months long, but time went pretty quickly. Once I finished school, I went to Augsburg, Germany. Needless to say, I had never been there before, so it was really great. Have you ever been to McDonalds and gotten beer from the drive thru? Now that is cool (of course that was before we knew how bad drinking and driving was...). I stayed there for four years, and the Army decided I needed a new job. Part of the new job was learning a foreign language. Of course, before the Army teaches you anything, guess what, another test! This test supposedly judges one's ability to learn a foreign language. Quite possibly the strangest test on the planet. So I take the test and the next thing I know, I'm in Monterey, California, learning to read, write and speak Japanese. I thought I was having a bad flashback to a WWII movie or something, but it was really cool. Think about it: How many people do you know that actually speak Japanese? Of course, after learning Japanese, do you actually think the Army would send me to Japan??? Well, much to my surprise...Expand for more
, that is exactly what happened. I spent two years at a small base outside of Tokyo (not enough room on this site for all of the stories), which used to be the Japanese Imperial Army Officer Academy until the end of WWII. After two years of mostly blacked out memories in Japan, the Army decides I have to learn another language. But this time I actually got to choose. Unfortunatley, I had a very short list to choose from: Arabic, Chinese and Korean. I opted for Korean, since I already spoke Japanese, it was an easy transition. So back to Monterey I went for another year an a half. After learning Korean, common sense dictates that I would go to Korea, right? Wrong!!! Back to Japan I went, except this time I went to Okinawa, which is like the Hawaii of Japan. The three years I spent in Okinawa are quite possibly the best three years of my life up to this point. I was doing a fun job in a great place. For all of you taxpayers out there, I thank you. Many of your tax dollars funded my "working" golf excursions and "business" nights out on the town. Maybe only Hugh Heffner has a better job than I had then. Now the sadness. After three great years in Okinawa, the Army tells me it's time to return to the good old USA. Fort Lewis, Washington, to be exact. Fort Lewis is maybe 30 minute south of Seattle , so lots to see and do. The unit wasn't so great, plus I developed a medical condition that pops up every now and again that causes me to go blind in one (so far only one) eye. Hard to fight the bad guys when you're blind. So now, I'm a disabled vet, but still work for the Army as a civilian.
