Darryl's Story

Life It seems like yesterday when we were bouncing around the the halls at CHS. I went to Northwood for a year after graduation, flunked out, and then joined the Army Reserves. It was just what I needed in order to get me focused and probably the most life-altering experience of my life; in a good way. I went to CMU after joining the reserves, joined ROTC, and got commissioned into the Army. The economy was tough but I was able to get a job at Flagstar Bank in Troy, MI. I spent 9 years with them working in various positions until they asked me to take a sales position in San Francisco, CA. I had no desire to even vacation there but took the job because of the opportunity. I really enjoyed it but still felt I was missing a bigger challenge. So, I packed up again and moved to Las Vegas and started a business in real estate and tourism. Working with a friend, we established our main office is in San Francisco. I operate our Las Vegas branch and travel between the two citites. It's nice but I have to admit that the winters are even cold out here! I've never been married, probably because I just haven't slowed down enough to think about it. I still have a lot of goals that I'd like to accomplish and expect to keep moving forward. School Greg McMillan inspired me the most. In 6th grade, I had an appendectomy and missed two weeks of school. All of the other teachers waived my homework except for Greg. So, I ended up spending the rest of the year doing that homework during my recess. I was mad because he would not waive it. He was right though. Not all things come free and easy. And, we need to work hard if we ever expect to get a break. I don't think I would change much about high school because I'm very ...Expand for more
happy about my direction in life. Changing this would mean a lot of other things would change. I had great friends and I'd never change that but I would change my attitude towards studying. College College, at CMU, was a great experience. I made a lot of new friends and finally caught up on all of that education that I ignored in high school. Somehow, Chad Neubecker, Brian Wentworth, Paul Hills, Brett Milholin, Randy (my brother), and I ended up renting a house together at CMU. I'll never forget the wild parties, tough exams, insane moments, close friendships, and watching it come to an end when we graduated. Workplace I've worked in the mortgage industry for the last 9 years and making a change now. It is going to change dramatically over the next 2-4 years so the trick is to not ride a crashing wave onto the beach. My next venture is going to be in Las Vegas. I'll still keep my hands in mortgages but I'm ready to close that chapter and start writing a new one. Military I needed this more than I realized at the time. I wasn't too focused but the Army helped put a lot of things into perspective. It was also the catalyst for making me realize the world isn't so big once we realize we aren't that small. I met a lot of great people....friends, mentors, and leaders...who brushed off some rough edges and taught me that our future is made by the battles we fight today. I'm indebted to great people like Bill Collopy, Paul Cook, Jeff Davis, Tom Ranson, Al Quattrin, Troy Brannon, Bill Coulter, Pam Ting, Dykstra Heinze, Deb Schneider, Justin Gibbs, Dell Bancroft, Bob Lombard, Gary Fisher, Rene Olivari, Brian Taylor, and Jason Edwards. I learned a little bit from each of them....and forever indebted.
