Darshaun's Story
After High School I worked doing odd jobs, landscaping, construction, cutting firewood, etc. (and took some classes at community college) for a few years. Then off to Southern Oregon State University. I couldn't sit still there so I did an exchange program to Japan for 1 semester. I enjoyed the program so the following year I went back. Upon return I transfered from SOSU to San Francisco State University to get a degree in Japanese. I went back to Japan in 98' for yet another exchange program, but this time to a school in Kyoto.
I graduated with no plan or direction. Having only broken Japanese ability and little to no work experience I decided to try and get a job at a bar in Kyoto. Funny thing was that Erek Riccobuano (from our 91' class) coincidentally was also in Japan and was working for a company in Tokyo. We got in touch and he suggested I apply for a sales position at a tech start up he was at. I didn't have the confidence, but he finally convinced me and h...Expand for more
ad the company offer to pay for my transportation up from Kyoto just for the interview.
Long story short, I got the job and never took the position at the bar. After 7 months of working in the sales position I quit the job and founded my own company in Tokyo. I developed a bilingual software platform for managing online intellectual property for multinational corporations. My computer skills consisted of being able to use email and "word" so I not able to write or design the system but worked with people who did.
In 2005 my company was acquired my a publicly traded Japanese corporation. I still remain an employee but tend to work from home or my boat.
Through work and pleasure I've been to I think over 40 countries. Recently I sailed my boat for what was to me an "epic voyage" across the Pacific ocean from Japan to Hawaii.
I'm looking forward to moving back to the US where I can pursue more interests and hobbies such as flying (recently got my pilots license).
