Daryl's Story

Life Not much of my personal life has changed for me since High School, other than my job. Still here in Laurel, though. I still look the same too. I suppose that can be a good thing. Just older and seemingly more wise. I have a lot of hobbies and I enjoy doing many various things in life as long as it enhances my life experience. There is also a lot of work to do on my house. That will keep me busy until retirement, be sure of that. You won't see me wasting time in front of a TV set. I have done a handful of interesting trips, adventures, and experiences, many only recently. I have also traveled a fair amount throughout the country, not a lot, but enough to see most major cities. My aspiration is to buy my own (large) plane one day and fly where I want. That's a big leap but hey...a person needs goals. I continue to collect toys, which I always enjoyed, and with Ebay, I am like in a giant toy store. I have been online for almost 10 years, but never considered something like 'classmates.com'. Plenty of people I wonder what ever happened to them. I'd like to know. Jessica comes to mind! I had not seen her since 1986, not a day goes by wondering. Mary and Maureen too, even though I have seen Mary not too long ago, a couple of years I guess. I read the Laurel Leader and sometimes see things about people I know or more appropriately, knew. I clip the article and stash it in my yearbook when I can. Life mushes on! UPDATE: After the 20 year reunion on 8-26-06, I realized that most of us have not changed much. I was almost stunned. It was real nice to have seen how some 'grew up', the former Ms. Ballard for sure. Wow. I regret not saying 'hi' to more people, or telling of my funny stories and adventures. I only wish I had the DJs play two songs by Nickelback: "Photograph" and "If Everyone Cared". For those who are curious, stick them on your Ipod and listen. For others who talked at length with me, thank you, and hope to see all again "in the future". School School? I still have dreams of being in high school. Still trying to figure it out...Expand for more
... Mr. Fraser and Mr. Stabler inspired me, so did Mr. Williams in metal shop. The quality of the staff and the quality of schools back then was very high. No regrets. Friends? Well, I never considered myself popular in school but everyone knew me. I remember names, but I doubt I'd recognize anyone from '86. Crushes? HA! Jessica Reynolds I suppose, albiet there was a 5 year lapse between 6th grade and 12th grade where she disappeared. To this day I still wonder where she is. Maureen was cool too but I never told her. I wonder what became of Crystal Brooks also. They both might be amused to know I still listen to Ozzy, Saxon, Megadeth, Metallica, Rush, and other 'metal'. There are others I wonder what happen to them. Some, I know what became of them (I check the crime section and obituaries once in a while in the local paper). Others, I assume they have moved away and are living fruitful lives. College I never finished college. I can kick myself for that. I seldom start something and not finish, however I intend to go back and get my degree though. Right now I am a mechanical engineer, without degree, self taught in almost everything I do. I may want to get a degree in history, since I enjoy history also. Another goal is to obtain a pilot's license. Talk about some serious goals in life. Workplace I have done a lot since High School, from auto mechanic to sales person to welder to machinist to mechanical engineer (which is current status). I design mechanisms and gadgets and see that the parts are made right and assembled correctly based on my drawings and specs. I sit at a desk most of the day, but I still get to work with equipment. I use 3-D drawing software to 'model' parts and assemblies on the computer. I am my own supervisor in most cases, undertaking design tasks from start to finish. I get to travel once in a while. This is about the only time you'd see me wear a suit. Military I was discouraged from going into the Air Force. I would have been a pilot if I did. Another regret in life but hindsight can't be judged.
