Dave's Story

Life Wow! 40 years! It feels like yesterday! In that 40 years I have lived in 3 states, Colorado, Ohio and now California. After graduating from Albion College in 1970, I worked at the college as assistant director of financial aid for 3 years. Then my brother and I opened our own floor covering store in Colorado Springs Colorado. That lasted about 4 years and then I joined my current company Farmers Insurance. Farmers transferred me back to Detroit and then to Columbus Ohio. I am now a district sales manager for Farmers in Pleasanton, California, the East Bay area of San Francisco. I hire and train insurance agents and help them grow thier own agencies. I currently manage 24 full time and 12 part-time agents in training. I have been with Farmers 28 years and counting. Barb and I met in Colorado Springs and have been married now for 26 years. We have lived in Livermore California for the past 19 years. We have three children, Erin 23, Shannon 19 and Cameron 16. Erin graduated from San Diego State University last year and lives and works in Hollywood on a TV production crew. She is engaged to be married and will tie the knot on labor day weekend this year. Shannon is a freshman at Chapman University, a small private liberal arts university in Orange, California, near Disneyland. Cameron is Junior at Livermore High School. I am active in the CPCU Society, a professional insurance association for those who have earned the CPCU designation. Its like a CPA for accounting, only in insurance. Barb and I are active in our church, Asbury United Methodist in Livermore. She sings in the choir and writes dramas and I serve on the stewardship and insurance committees. our two cats and one dog, and I especially enjoy working on Cameron's 1965 Ford Mustang with him. It is about 80% restored. Cars sure have changed in 40 years, but Mustangs are still cool with the teenage crowd. My mom and sister moved out of Garden City about 10 years ago and now live in Brighton, so I get back to Michigan about once a year for a visit. I grew up in and she lived in that big red brick house on Maplewood across the street from the high school football practice field. It is still there owned by the people who bought it from my mom. The house was built in 1945 and my mom and dad moved into it in 1947. She lived there almost 40 years. I am looking forward to the reunion and seeing old friends. It is interesting to see the various paths, twists and turns everyone's lives have taken. The high school years seemed so momentus at the time, and looking back they are so short and fleeting. We are older now than most of our parents were when we were in high school. As they say, youth is wasted on the young . . . College I attended Eastern Michigan University, right out of high school, flunking out the second semester of my freshman year. Too much partying in the dorms, which were packed as triples in every room. I then went to Schoolcraft College and graduated with an A.A. degree in 1968. I then transferred to Albion College, and graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, in June 1970. I majored in speech, with an english minor. I earned 21 hours toward a master's degree at U of M, before dropping out and moving to Colordo to go into business with my brother Don. I worked at Ablion as the assistand director of financia aid for 3 years before moving to Colorado.
