Dave's Story

After graduation, I decided to turn down that grant to Franklin College and joined the Army instead (not noted for a gigantic IQ). I served two years in Korea as an Intelligence Analyst and returned to attend Language School at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA, where I learned to speak, read, write and understand Arabic. Upon graduation, I was sent to Vietnam, which everyone knows was just crawling with Arabs. I was recommended for a direct commission to 1st Lieutenant and came back to the States to learn to fly helicopters at Fort Wolters (now defunct) at Mineral Wells, Texas. I met a girl there on a blind date for the solo party. We'll celebrate our 42d anniversary August 12, 2008. She raised my son from a previous marriage from age 2. He's now nearly 44 and living in Dallas with his wife and son. We adopted a daughter at age 9 days. She's now 29 and is to be married on August 9th--the anniversary of her intended's proposal which occurred at sun-up just as they reached the summit of Mt. Fuji! In the meantime, I'd resigned from active duty after my second tour to Vietnam (and my third time being shot) in order to go back to school. I received my undergraduate degree in Business Admin. from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX and started an Masters from there also. During those years, I worked as Chief of Detectives for the Mineral Wells, Texas PD, served two years as an Assistant to City Manager, and then taught Criminal Justice and Sociology at a Jr. College in Weatherford, TX until shortly after adopting our daughter in 1978. I took a job as a Land Management Agent for Mobil Oil Corporation, moved to Oklahoma City in 1982 where we've lived (except for two years in Liberal [By God], Kansas) ever since. I retired from Mobil in 1996, just before it's merger with Exxon, and have worked off and on as a paid consultant all over the place, but mostly in Shreveport, Louisiana (though I still officially lived in Oklahoma City.) I recently was offered a consultant's job with OG&E, the local power company in Oklahoma and have (finally) been living at home and sleeping in my own bed for the last couple of months. Hope this finds all my old classmates well and happy. I was made aware of the passing of Ron Noble and was in Indiana on a business trip a year or so before he passed so got to visit with him before he died. I hear from Barbara Williams from time to time and she keeps me updated on Bob Williams' health situation--which thankfully seemed to be improving at last report. Every so often, I make contact with Barry Eller, who, oddly, also lives in Oklahoma. We've been planning on a golf outing for some years now but can't seem to get our schedules straight. Maybe now that I'm back home in Oklahoma City, though......... Larry Pellum, who runs the alumnae association's website, told me of the passing of Sampson Marr early this Summer. Sam was quite a guy and a life-long member of the Bandidos motorcycle gang, who paid for his funeral & burial in their own cemetery in Dayton, OH. I heard from Sue Nighbert once when she and her family were living in Alaska but have more or less lost touch with everyone else. Hope this piques your curiosity and you take the time to contact me. Have a happy! Yesterday, August 31st, 2008, my wife and I had lunch with Mr. & Ms. Barry Eller of Stillwater, Oklahoma (also DCHS class of 1960) and with Mr. & Ms. Mark Townsend (DCHS class of 1959) who were passing through on their way to Las Vegas. It was a delightful visit. Last Fall, Bob and Barbara Williams came to Oklahoma to visit with Barry and Linda Eller and my wife and I drove up to Stillwater to see them, too. While the men played golf at Barry's club, the women went shopping. Later we had dinner at the Eller's and enjoyed a very nice visit. Funny, but I've seen more of my old classmates in the last year than in the last 40 years! Nothing much new for 2009 (except my disgust with Congress). I blew out my left knee (again) in August, just stepping off of a curb. Had surgery in September and was off work for about 4 months--back at it by mid-December. Today is New Year's Day, 2010. Let's hope it's better than 2009. It'll be our 50th Reunion year...which I intend to TRY and attend, but health concerns may prevent that. Plus, if the economy goes as I fear, NO one who lives outside of Indianapolis may be able to attend. We're facing massive inflation before long, I fear, mostly because the bug-wits in D.C. don't seem to have a single, functioning brain cell among them. Here it is late February of 2011 and the economy is sliding further into massive inflation and unsupportable debt--to China, of all places. Wow! Already late Summer of 2011. We set records for heat all over the place here in Oklahoma this year. My July A/C bill was $325, which is gigantic around here..at least for a house the size of ours (about 2,500 sq ft, single-story.) I stayed pretty much off the golf course this summer because of the oppressive heat. My lack of exercise is showing around my waist, too. Didn't, of course, make the 50th reunion. In fact, I was working on a major project when it came around and couldn't take the time off. I'll probably keep working until I drop in the saddle, I suppose. I've known lots of guys who've retired and dropped dead within six months. Someone once said the the number one ...Expand for more
killer of men in the U.S. is retirement. Perhaps so. As long as I enjoy my work and continue to be productive, I'll probably keep at it. Now late Fall of 2011 (nearly Thanksgiving already). Our stepgrandaughter just got out of the hospital after a bout with some stomach problem, only to take our stepgreat-grandson TO the hospital with a severe case of strep throat. Our daughter-in-law is really stressed out over all this. Our daughter recently started work at a new job...which she loves and our foster kids are again planning on Thanksgiving dinner at our house. I'm still working and scheduled for an annual performance review this afternoon. It's December now, 2011 and all here are well and healthy. I'm in the process of trying to exercise more to get my weight back down to manageable levels. Strangely, I don't eat all that much, but still seem to gain one or two pounds every year anyway. I suppose that goes along with being nearly 70 (January 17th). My wife eats at least as much, if not more, and stays around 100# regardless. Of course, she's also 5 years younger than I am, too. For anyone who cares, it's now 2013 and we're about to begin another excruciating 4 years with the Obama administration. I just had my 71st birthday and am still working full-time and enjoying it Now early summer of 2013 and we've suffered through several devastating tornados around here. The worst one--the one that killed 24 people in mid-May, missed us by about 1 1/2 miles. The May 31st storm actually chased the wife and I down to Norman where we'd opted to go to get out of the path of the storms. It came within about a mile, but it was dark and we never really saw it. We're still finding bodies of victims. At one point, the worst of the May 31st storms was 2.6 miles wide at the base! One of the "joys" of living in tornado alley, but makes life exciting at least. Still working, but tiring of it rapidly., June, 2015. I retired in March of 2014. I've undergone knee replacement surgery--my left knee (damaged by football in HS and jumping out of airplanes in the Army)--and will do the other sometime later this year. Using a cane to keep my balance since the surgery left me with my left leg about 3/8" longer than my right. Earlier this year, I started volunteering at the local airport (Will Rogers World Airport) at the travelers' aid/information desk I work a SCHEDULED 4-hour shift once a week and fill in other days, as needed. It's been fun and great for a people-watcher like me. I usually man the desk from 6 to 10PM but often stay until 10:30 or 11, depending on whether or not we're expecting delayed flights in. So far, I've had both lenses in my eyes replaced from cataract surgery, I have false teeth, 8 stents in my heart, wear hearing aids in both ears and one knee replaced--slowly becoming bionic, piece by piece. Funny, by my golf game has improved--maybe because I'm more careful about torque-ing my knees. The wife and I will celebrate our 49th anniversary this coming August. Went through a rough patch 40 years ago, but have been relatively happy ever since. Someone hacked (and then erased) my e-mail account awhile back and I lost all of my e-mail addresses, so lost contact with most of those with whom I've corresponded. September 2015 and still enjoying retirement (sort of). Will probably be replacing the right knee later this Fall--which I dread. Last time, I reacted badly to the anesthesia and kept trying to eat that little red light on my finger, thinking it was candy, plus I developed a pulmonary embolism that took 6 months to get rid of. Played golf yesterday and had a decent round considering it's the 2nd round I've played in over a year! Went with my foster son, foster grandson-in-law and my youngest foster granddaughter's boyfriend to a local indoor range to zero in the scopes on a couple of my rifles getting ready for deer season. If I have that knee surgery I'll probably not go this year, however. I'll miss pheasant hunting in Kansas, too, in all likelihood. Hope this finds everyone well and happy. I forgot to mention that both our daughter and son have gone through divorces. Our daughter had no children, thankfully, but our son has a son who is nearly 19 now and graduated HS in Allen, TX, last Spring. He's working now and considering the military service himself. Has no interest in going to college, however. He has no contact with his mother any longer. Our daughter is back dating again and has a very nice young man (7 years her junior, in fact) with whom she seem to be head-over-heels with. He's originally from Tyler, TX, but lives in OKC and is a practicing attorney. I approve of him. That didn't work out for our daughter and she has since met and married a young attorney from Dallas. She graduated from law school herself this past Spring and will be moving to Dallas later this month where she plans to take the Bar. Our son is a regional manager for Finish First and lives in Clearwater, Florida. Our grandson is working for a Vape supply company in Dallas and is now out of the Navy. I now have 9 stents and an artificial aortic valve, suffer from congestive heart failure, and have two knees made of chromium cobalt. The good thing is that I see much better after eye surgeries and read prodigiously these days. The wife and I will celebrate our 54th anniversary next month!
