CLASS OF 1973

Dave's Story

A lot has happened since high school. Four days after graduating, was at Marine boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina. Then was sent to Camp Pendleton for advanced infantry training. Before the year was up was sent to the American Embassy in Budapest, Hungary and later to Tel Aviv, Israel as an embassy guard. Then came back stateside to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Then became part of the fleet Marine force in the Meditteranean Sea covering southern Europe, Lebanon, and North Africa. Shortly after returning back to the States, my enlistment was up so got an honorable discharge and came back home to Oklahoma. Spent the next 10 plus years roughnecking, farm/ranch work, had a work clothes store during the last big oil boom before the bust and went broke. Started a yard service and rode a bareback bronc in the Elk City Rodeo. In 1986, applied and eventually got on the California Highway Patrol. Did my rookie year at El Centro then transferred to Winterhaven, California where all the officers lived in Yuma, Arizona. After four and a half years, spent a year i...Expand for more
n the Monterrey area and then 3 years in northern California at the Clear Lake area. Spent my last 10 years on the patrol at Needles, California but lived in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. In 2006, I retired. That was a wild and crazy time out in California. Wouldn't trade the experience for anything but definitely would not want to go through it again. In 2000, wrote a book titled "The American Basics". There's a dot com website for it but Classmates won't let you post a website but you can find it on the Internet. While going through the CHP academy, I married Pauline. Met her at North Phoenix Baptist Church and we took a liking to each other so we decided to get married. Come December 5, we will celebrate our 23rd anniversary. That's pretty special !!! In 2008, we moved back to Oklahoma. It is so good to be home in Elk City! Get by to see Mom and Dad every other day. Have been gardening every spring and summer, done a little golfing and a little fishing. Work part time at a juvenile detention center. Life is good and enjoying it. Hope you are too.
