Dave's Story

dave at davewhitney dot com. Somehow you took a wrong turn and ended up here at my bio. I'd hate to disappoint, so here's the quick life update. Oh, and I should mention it now... thanks for stopping by. After graduating high school, I quickly became proficient at staying busy while accomplishing absolutely nothing. Since I loved (and still love) art, I took two "freshman" classes at the University of Maine in Orono. I loved it so much that I took it no further. I never was the most driven of souls. I joined the Navy hoping to gain six years of life experience, the GI Bill, and a formidable art portfolio. Instead I gained about ten years of life experience (in those six years), one ex-wife, a fiancee, oh - and the GI Bill. I didn't make it back to Maine to finish up my art degree. It's funny to put it in such favorable terms... after all, you can't finish something that you never officially started... right? At least during my six years in the Navy I must have drawn volumes of sketches, right? Woulda, coulda, shoulda... About a year or so before I was to get out of the Navy, my girlfriend asked me, "What...Expand for more
are you going to do when you get out?" I didn't have a plan. I scanned the room for an "out." My gaze fell upon my now father-in-law's computer books. "I.T." I replied in a 'convincing enough' tone that she must have bought it. It actually made some sense to do so though, and thus IT became my mission in life. I remember spending evenings in the parking lot across from my ship reading my first IT book... Networking Essentials. Some of it really blew me away. I was pretty hooked. I married in 2000. We had our first child, my beautiful daughter, in 2001. Her cute little brother entered the scene in 2005. Family is my biggest source of joy. Food has been up there too, but I'm trying to correct that problem. What else? I have been taking photos for years even though I always wanted to get into visual art or illustration. However, of late - there has been a shift... now it's photography & vector illustration. It's that one (non-familial) thing in my life that I want to work at. Call it a hobby or a passion, it's what I'm 'doing' when I'm not doing work or family stuff. Thanks for coming by. Drop a line.
