David's Story

I was born in El Chuco (El Paso), attended Beall Elementry, Zavala, Jeff, and got my GED at Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Tx. I grew up in "El Barrio" and found myself drafted into the Army in 1970, where I did a tour in Nam, got out when the "All Volunteer Army" started and was given a choice to re-enlist or get out four months early. I chose "El Barrio" and getting out, cause I thought the Army wasn't for me, and I wanted to make life better for my Mom and little sister Gloria. Little to no surprise, I went from job to job (remember, I chose the "Barrio life") and couldn't stay out of trouble. But, lucky for me, I hated drugs and needles, and even though I did love beer, I decided I was going nowhere (tried Community College) partied every friday at "El Rio" instead of getting educated in college, so enlisted in the Army in 1975. The Army and my wife Cecilia kept me straight, so I made it a career and even though I visited my friends in "El Barrio" when I came home on leave, I managed to stay out of trouble most of the time, lol. I did 21 yrs 11 months and 29 days in the Army, (10 yrs Infantry and 11 Mechanized Infantry) one tour in Korea, three tours in Germany and a tour in Iraq, before retiring in Killeen, Tx. I have a son currently in the Army who just went over 15 yrs in December 2012, with one tour in Iraq and just got back from Afganistan on 19 Dec. 2013. My Grandkids are Rebecca Jean (Becky), David Carlos (David) and Adriana, all from my son Carlos (I only have one son). My Grandson (David) is planning his wedding in June 2014, and hoping to join the Air Force after his wedding. My Granddaughter Becky wants to enjoy life...Expand for more
and travel everywhere before even thinking of marriage, lol (I think she is very SMART). Since retiring from the Army, I have gone to Truck Driving School, spent 6yrs "over the road" and have been employed by my city now 12 yrs. I enjoy fishing when the weather permits and there's enough water in the lakes in Tx for my Bass boat to get launched safely, lol. As you can see by my picture on my profile (taken a yr ago) I also enjoy NASCAR, which comes to Ft Worth in Apr and Nov each yr, so I spend the NASCAR weekends in Ft Worth (I love to relax in the Holiday Inn Express) and am hoping to attend the Daytona 500 in Feb this year (already have a town house reserved for the weekend) lol. Oh, I also have a "homeboy" working with me in the city (found out we were both living in "El Diablo" and had friends we both knew in the area, even if I was not from "El Diablo" my Mom lived in the projects there). Some of my best friends from back then, enclode my compadre, dearly departed "Boy" (La Sanna), "Spagetti", Ricky, Robert, Hector, and "Polly" all Cisneros from "El Barrio", "Lolo" (Panthers in El Diablo), Sapo (DDT). Other friends include Tony Favela y mi comadre Rita and her familia (Enjoyed the family reunion I was invited too, hope you guys keep the tradition), Helen M, Teachi M, Poncho, Irma (Mima), Margie and Pepa Morales, and others who remember "Shadow". My brothers and sisters include dearly departed Angela Apodaca and Victoria Mendoza, Robert (Chicago), Ruben (California), Irene Romero (New Orleans), Gilbert (El Chuco), and Gloria Lares (California). Too many neices and nephews to mention (I'll run out of room and hurt some feelings, lol).
