David's Story
Too many decades have passed to tell any kind of coherent story. There have been lots of interesting, even exciting bits along the way. Some sad ones too.
As for the basics, I left VPSS heading for Stanford in California, along with Tom McClellan from our class. Circumstances caused me to return to U of T after a memorable year away; thereafter, it was a couple of degrees in physiology, a hiatus to travel, then teach, and then on to medical school. I married while in med school and we headed west to Calgary for residency and subsequent a highly varied career in family medicine. Later in life (perhaps mid-life for all the Gail Sheehy fans), I decided to venture out of the city and moved to the tiny First Nations community of Bella Bella BC, where I still work and reside, although this will be the final year here. There is a lot of landscape between where I have lived and many of our classmates. I feel fortunate to have been able to make connections, of varying degrees, with several classmates: Tony Tilly, Judi Shaw, Kathy Reeve, Sharry Flett, Jim McKibbin and Kit Thompson.
I didn't realize it at the time, but with the perspective I have now (especially having heard of others high school experiences and vicariously witnessing my sons'), I know that I was extremely fortunate to have the high school teachers that I did (too many to mention but notably Mr. Goode, Mr. Davis, Mrs Fraser, Mr Richardson, Mr, Evans and Miss Milne) ,the parenting of my mom and dad and the friendship of some very fine people. I think that we all lived in a rather magical age and that deadly dull Don Mills was a perfect, secure and nurturing place to experience it.
