David's Story

“Life is SHORT” -- And yet --- "What a LONG strange trip it's been" - Came from Montana to Southern Oregon at 5. Then five “tiny towns” or small burbs and SIX schools in 12 years! Malin, Monmouth, Willamette (WL), Schuebel (Beavercreek), Molalla HS, West Linn HS. Moved from Beavercreek & Molalla High in '76 and graduated from West Linn in 1978...Started college, but regretfully didn't get very far having to work full-time too. Started a fast-track workaholic management career at Costco in '83, "Flew south" and managed several locations in N. California for 10 years, landing in the coastal paradise of Santa Cruz. "Retired" in 1999 to take a much needed mid-life break, then try and make a fortune investing & explore my 'do what you love the money will follow' fantasies. (I said TRY!). Including US & world travel & scuba-diving, and otherwise "find" myself. <Sometimes seems I got more lost instead!> After a long courtship, married my lovely post High School sweetheart Lesley, (Class of 83), but guess it wasn't meant to be a forever thing, though we remained ‘soul buddies’. Never remarried or had kids, wanhhh, I love 'em!...But always treated my beloved dogs as my children. Came "home" for an extended visit in '01, and things turned out such that I've been here ever since. Been trying to build a 'carpentry art' business and doing all manner of other 'property services' work. Fate had other plans I guess, as multiple serious health woes took over my life in 2014-15. Including that I'm now a massive heart attack survivor as of summer 2017. I always wonder what became of people, life seems to take unexpected paths. Mine sure did. Came out of...Expand for more
my shy-boy shell and enjoyed success and experiences beyond my wildest country-boy dreams...only to have life zig-zag all over the spectrum of human experience, then come full circle back to 'ground zero' and starting over. Anyway, seems we are the lucky(?) generation that's old enough to have grown up in the pre-techno-takeover age, yet young enough to get it now. And have this chance to "live in the past", (or at least reconnect & revisit), like nobody before us thanks to this amazing cyber-space time machine. We’ve come a long way from when a ‘Social Media’ presence was having our family name and number listed in the local phone book, and our pictures in school yearbooks. And actively participating in it was passing notes under school desks or snail-mailing cards and letters. (So archaically handwritten on paper with crayons, pencils, and ink pens!). Or hollering down halls, across gyms and playgrounds, or talking on big rotary dial phones tethered to the wall. As long as the ‘strange trip’ has been, simultaneously seems to have passed in an insta-flash, doesn't it? {Maybe that’s the strangest thing about it?} And having now faced MY mortality up SO scary close and personal, and seeing more and more of “us” good ol’ peeps passing on every year, including one of my all-time best friends at only 51… ’Life is Short’ and ‘It’s now or never’ have taken on a whole new meaning and sense of urgency. So I'd love to hear from anyone who knew me, (or wanted to?), while we’re still ‘alive & kicking‘, as opposed to having kicked the proverbial bucket, in which case it’ll be too late! =;~}...Live long & prosper in PEACE, LOVE, HEALTH, & HAPPINESS Good Peeps!
